
Comeback Falls Short in Syracuse

(Syracuse, NY) - The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (42-36) ninth inning rally fell short on Sunday evening as they lost to the Syracuse Mets (32-45) 5-4. The 'Pigs scored three runs after trailing 5-1 heading into the top of the ninth inning.
Mark Vientos hit an RBI double against Michael Plassmeyer in the bottom of the third inning to give Syracuse a 1-0 lead. Plassmeyer pitched just 2 2/3 innings. He allowed the lone run and gave up three hits and issued one walk with three strikeouts. Zach Warren followed with a scoreless 1 1/3 innings of relief.
The IronPigs tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the seventh inning as Dustin Peterson hit an RBI single against Jake Reed that scored Chris Sharpe. Peterson extended his hitting streak to nine games. Syracuse scored four runs against Jonathan Hennigan (3-1) in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 5-1 lead. Johneshwy Fargas hit at three-run double, and Luke Ritter walked with the bases loaded to bring in a run.
Donny Sands hit a three-run home run against Eric Orze in the top of the ninth inning to cut Syracuse's lead to 5-4. The home run was Sands' third of the season.
Ryan Sherriff pitched a scoreless inning in relief on a Good Shepherd Rehabilitation Appearance. He issued two walks and recorded one strikeout. Michel Otanez (3-0) earned the win by pitching a scoreless 1 1/3 inning of relief. Joe Zanghi earned his first save of the season by recording
the final out of the game.
The IronPigs return home to begin a six-game series on Monday evening against the Rochester Red Wings. First pitch on Monday Coca-Cola Park is at 6:35 p.m.
