Four-Run First Lifts Jacksonville Over Memphis
July 3, 2022 - International League (IL)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
With the help of a five-run third inning, the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp opened July with a 6-4 win over Memphis Friday night. Jacksonville (41-35) blew the game open with five runs in the third inning. That was capped off with a two-run home run by Ryan Lavarnway to give Jacksonville a 6-0 lead. Memphis responded with a run in the bottom of the third and three in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 6-4 game but the Jacksonville bullpen held strong for four scoreless innings to lock the game down.
BULLSEYE Over the club's last 30 games, Jacksonville has been able to rally to at least tie from four-, five- and eight-run deficits, respectively. A recurring theme during this stretch has been the Jumbo Shrimp's ability to attack opposing bullpens.
During this 30-game stretch, Jacksonville has scored 99 runs (83 earned for a 5.54 ERA) in 138.2 innings patrolled by opposing relief pitchers. The Jumbo Shrimp have gone 147-for-552 (.266) at the plate against relievers over the last 30 games.
HAKUNA QUINTANA Over his last 49 games, Lorenzo Quintana has gone 49- for-194 at the plate, slashing .253/.318/.479/.797 with 11 doubles, 11 home runs, 41 RBIs and 35 runs scored.
This recent stretch, which comes on the heels of Quintana starting the season with a .267/.281/.400/.681 batting line, has pushed the native of Pinar del Rio in Cuba into the league's top 20 in HR (T-12th, 12), RBIs (11th, 43), SLG (16th, .485) and total bases (22nd, 100).
ROAD IS WHERE THE HEART IS Jacksonville boasts a 25-16 road record thus far in 2022, but the club has struggled at home, posting just a 16-20 mark.
Interestingly, the Jumbo Shrimp have hit far better on the road, posting a team batting line of .276/.357/.472. The club's resulting .829 road OPS places fourth in Triple-A and second in the IL. When playing at 121 Financial Ballpark, Jacksonville is hitting .236/.312/.387, with the club's .699 OPS ranking 24th at the Triple-A level and 15th in the International League. Only 36 of the Jumbo Shrimp's 100 homers (36percent) have come at home.
NOT A BRIG BOY, A BRIGMAN! After a stellar 2021 campaign with Jacksonville, (.282/.361/.399/.760 in 104 games), Bryson Brigman started 2022 a little slow. Through his first 25 games, Brigman was hitting .138/.188/.223/.411. However, in his last 34 contests dating back to May 20, Brigman is 43-for- 130 at the plate, slashing .328/.368/.493/.861 with seven doubles, three triples, three home runs, 12 RBIs and 20 runs scored. In his first 25 games, he tallied just two multi-hit games. Brigman has since reached base in 26 of his last 32 affairs, posting 14 multi-hit contests.
CALL THE FIREMAN! In Saturday's contest, the Jumbo Shrimp fell 4-3 in 10 innings. Jacksonville has struggled to put games away with their bullpen, tallying 16 saves in 33 opportunities (48.5%).
However, in their last 23 games, the Jacksonville bullpen has found their footing. In 89.1 innings, the bullpen has allowed 27 runs, 22 earned, pitching to a tune of a 2.22 ERA.
They have also yielded 56 hits and 27 walks against 100 strikeouts. The Jumbo Shrimp are 13-10 over this span.
JULY FIREWORKS After finishing the month of June with a 14-12 record, Jacksonville split their first two games in July and are 1-1.
In 2021, the Jumbo Shrimp finished the month of July with a 16-12 record. So far this season, the best month overall for the Jumbo Shrimp was April where they finished 13-10 (.565). They followed up with a 13-13 record (.500) in May and June saw Jacksonville record a 14-12 record (.538).
