 Rochester Red Wings

Three Home Run Night Pushes Wings to Victory

July 3, 2022 - International League (IL)
Rochester Red Wings News Release

The Rochester Red Wings snapped a five-game losing streak in their 9-8 win over the Red Sox on Sunday night at Frontier Field. Homers from 1B Joey Meneses, C Riley Adams, and CF Cole Freeman led the way as the Wings avoided a six-game sweep and won their first home game against Worcester this season.

RHP Anibal Sanchez toed the rubber in his second rehab start with the Wings, giving up five hits and three runs in 4.2 innings.

The Wings got on the board first thanks to a solo homer from Meneses in the bottom of the first. Meneses has struggled against Worcester this series, going 1-for-18 at the plate and failing to record a hit since June 28. His homer was the first since June 15 at Scranton, yet Meneses still ranks fifth in the International League in homers with 16 on the year.

C Riley Adams added to the scoring in the first with an RBI double that scored DH Josh Palacios. It was Adams' first hit in a Red Wings uniform, but it wouldn't be his last of the day.

Worcester took a 3-2 lead in the fourth on a three-run triple from Devlin Grandberg, but Rochester tied it up when Adams logged his second hit of the game, this time a homer to left field. His last homer came on May 28 with the Washington Nationals off Colorado righty Robert Stephenson.

Rochester scored two more runs in the fifth on a pair of sacrifice flies from LF Andrew Stevenson and Meneses. The Sox hung around, making it a one-run game in the top of the sixth before 3B Adrian Sanchez hit a two-run RBI single that scored 2B Jake Noll and RF Nick Banks.

Rochester deployed the bullpen with four straight lefties, including LHP Luis Avilan, LHP Matt Cronin, LHP Alberton Baldonado, and LHP Francisco Perez. Perez threw a wild pitch that gave Worcester their fifth run, but it was RHP Tyler Clippard's two runs allowed that tied the game at 7-7.

Enter Cole Freeman. He hit his second home run of the year (the first coming on 5/24) in the eighth to put the Wings up 9-7. His bomb would prove to be the game winner as Clippard held off a rally in the ninth.

The win moves Rochester's record to 41-37, and they remain in sixth place in the IL.

The Wings will travel to Lehigh Valley for a Fourth of July contest against the second place Iron Pigs. First pitch is set for 6:35 p.m.
