MOOSIC, PA (July 2, 2022)
- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (35-42) defeated the Buffalo Bisons 4-3 in a rain-shortened game on Saturday
evening for their sixth consecutive victory. Estevan Florial hit two solo home runs and has now gone yard four times in this series.
After an 18-minute delay before first pitch, Buffalo struck for three in the first against RailRiders' starter Hayden Wesneski. Cullen Large and Nick Podkul
combined to drive in the three runs for the Bisons as part of a four-baserunner inning. The RailRiders responded with two runs of their own in the
bottom of the frame. Florial led off the inning with his eighth home run of the season. Tim Locastro followed that with a triple and was then brought
home on a sacrifice fly from Greg Bird to cut the deficit to 3-2. Scranton Wilkes-Barre jumped in front with two runs in the third. Florial launched his
second big fly of the game to right to tie the game at three. Florial is 9-for-16 with eight extra-base hits this series. Two batters later, Oswald Peraza
hit his team-leading tenth home run of the campaign to make it 4-3 SWB. The game went into a rain delay midway through the top of the fifth with
two on and one out. Wesneski returned to the mound after the 15-minute stoppage and proceeded to retire the next two batters he faced to get
through the inning. Wesneski allowed three runs over those five frames of work with a season-high nine strikeouts.
Shane Greene entered from the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre bullpen and pitched a scoreless sixth before the rain started falling yet again. Following another
half-hour delay, the game was ultimately called after six innings in the 4-3 final. Wesneski (3-7) earned the win for SWB. Shane Greene (2) picked up
his second save of the week. Bowden Francis (5-7) suffered the loss for the Bisons.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
- The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome in the Buffalo Bisons, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, for the first time
this season. The RailRiders played their only series in Buffalo, NY in late April with the Bisons taking four-of-six games.
SUNDAY SWEEPING
- The RailRiders are seeking their first six-game series sweep in franchise history. During their eight-game winning streak in 2021
from June 12 to June 22, the RailRiders had a game rained out in Syracuse on June 19 and postponed to later in the season, negating the opportunity
at completing a six-game series sweep. Six-games series were implemented starting in the 2021 season.
SWIPER YES SWIPING
- Estevan Florial has stolen 26 bases this season, which leads the International League. Twenty-six stolen bases is a single-
season career-high for him. Florial is currently on pace to steal 51 bases this season which would set a franchise record, besting Tommy Barrett's 44
stolen bags in 1989 (inaugural season).
GO WITH THE FLO
- Estevan Florial is 9-for-16 in this series with eight extra-base hits including four home runs. He has raised his season average
to .307 during this series with his OPS up to .900, the highest OPS he's had this year since April 14, seven games (28 at-bats) into the season (.982).
He has a hit in 20 of his last 23 RailRiders games.
4G INVERTED DIVE WITH A MiG-27
TH
- Miguel Andújar was lifted mid-game on Friday night after going 1-for-3 with an RBI. He was called yesterday
as the Yankees' "27th Man" in their doubleheader in Cleveland, going a combined 1-for-8, with an RBI, walk and two runs scored. He tallied a hit in 16
of 21 games played in the month of June. In this series with Buffalo, he had gone 7-for-15 with a homer, double and seven RBI.
GIVE IT TO GREG
- Greg Weissert leads the team with seven saves in eight opportunities. Seven saves are the most he's tallied in a single season of
his career. He has been asked to gather four outs in three of those saves including in the Tuesday opener this week against the Bisons. Weissert's only
blown save this year came on June 8 on the road against the Syracuse Mets. He has made seven-straight scoreless outings.
ARM-AND-O LEG
- Armando Alvarez enters Sunday on a six-game hitting streak, the longest he's had this season. During this stretch, he is 10-for-20
with four homers and two doubles. With nine homers in 104 at-bats, he is hitting a home run in every 11.55 at-bats, the highest rate he's had in any
one season in his career. Entering the season, he was homering once in every 44.33 at-bats (39-of-1,729).
VIVA PE-RAZA
- José Peraza's seven-game hitting streak ended on Saturday, during which he went 9-for-25 (.360) with two home runs and a double.
In his first 46 games of the season, Peraza went 23-for-114 (.202) with seven extra-base hits. In the following 20 games, he had gone 24-for-72 (.333)
with nine extra-base hits.
KROOKING WITH GAS
- Friday night, Matt Krook took a perfect game into the eighth inning, retiring the first 23 batters he faced. It pushed a streak
he had into the game to 42 straight batters retired dating back two previous outings. Buffalo's Chavez Young broke up the bid with a single tapped
in front of the plate. Krook exited after issuing a walk after striking out a season-high ten batters on 93 pitches. Krook also now has an active 21.2
scoreless innings streak. There has never been a perfect game in franchise history.
JUNE, NOT GLOOM
- The RailRiders finished the month of June with a 15-12 record, their first winning record in a lone month this season. They had
won nine games in both April and May. June also saw the team's highest batting average, on-base percentage, slugging percentage, total home
runs and their lowest ERA of any one month.
ON DECK
- The RailRiders are on the road starting Monday. They return Tuesday, July 12 to host the Louisville Bats. It's "Twosday". Get 2-for-1 lawn
or bleacher seats online only and enjoy $2 Landshark Lager tallboys for two hours after gates open, presented by PrimoHoagies and The River.
AROUND THE ORGANIZATION
- The New York Yankees (58-21) swept a doubleheader over the Cleveland Guardians 13-4 and 6-1 Saturday. Giancarlo
Stanton hit his 100th career Yankees home run. Jordan Montgomery faces Triston McKenzie today at 1:40 PM in the finale... The Somerset Patriots
(45-29) lost 9-6 to the Reading Fightin Phils. They have lost four-of-five games this week to Reading. The series wraps tonight at 6:45 PM... The Hudson
Valley Renegades (37-37) held the Brooklyn Cyclones to just two hits in a 2-1 victory. It was the third two-hitter thrown by the Renegades this season,
with all three coming against the Cyclones. TJ Sikkema starts the finale at 6:05 PM... The Tampa Tarpons (33-41) edged past the Bradenton Marauders
3-2. The winning run scored on a double steal with Alexander Vargas stealing home. The series closes tonight at 6:30 PM...

2022 PREASEASON PROSPECT RANKINGS:
Baseball America - NYY No. 37
2022 MIDSEASON PROSPECT RANKINGS:
Baseball America - NYY No. 24
LAST TIME OUT:
Brito tossed five innings in front of rehabbing Aroldis Chapman. He surrendered a pair of runs
in a tough second inning, but bounced back to last five and earn his second win at Triple-A with SWB coming out
on top over Buffalo on June 28 by a 5-4 final.
BA SAYS:
In the Baseball America 2022 Prospect Handbook, the publication states: "Tabbed as having the best
control in the systen, Brito's average arsenal plays a bit better than would be expected thanks to how well he
commands it, as well as some intriguing analytical characteristics."
IN THE TWO-A:
Somerset manager Dan Fiorito said this of Brito before his call up: "He can attack you in so many
ways. On top of things, he's got that velocity up now, with a plus changeup he's able to throw to righties and
we're able to see how effective he is, whether it's strikeouts or inducing weak contact. He's able to do both."
2022 HIGHLIGHTS:
-¢ Called up to RailRiders 6/1 from Double-A Somerset for his first Triple-A call-up
-¢ Named Double-A Eastern League Pitcher of the Week for April 25 to May 1
PERSONAL/CAREER:
-¢ Would have been Rule 5 eligibile this season had the Rule 5 Draft not have been cancelled due to logistics
complications caused by the MLB lockout.
-¢ Spent bulk of 2021 with High-A Hudson Valley, going 4-4 with a 2.57 ERA and ranking third on the Renegades'
pitching staff with 70.0 IP and 73 K
-¢ High-A East Pitcher of the Week for week of July 26, 2021, while with the Hudson Valley Renegades
-¢ In 2017, he pitched in three games for Short-season Staten Island, before injury that prompted Tommy John
surgery and caused him to miss the remainder of the 2017 season plus 2018.
