Worcester Red Sox News Release
ROCHESTER, NY - Despite a game-tying three-run rally in the eighth inning, the Worcester Red Sox took a 9-8 loss to the Rochester Red Wings on Sunday night, putting an end to their season-high six-game winning streak.
Worcester still earned a 5-1 road series victory in Rochester, and the WooSox have won 11 of their last 13 games.
Trailing 7-4 in the top of the eighth, Worcester mounted a rally with a Christin Stewart single and walks to Jeter Downs and Johan Mieses. All three runners came in to score with the help of two wild pitches and an RBI single by Yolmer Sanchez to tie the game at 7-7.
Rochester took the lead for good in the bottom of the eighth. After Nick Banks was hit by a pitch, Cole Freeman cleared the bullpen wall in left field with the eventual game-winning two-run homer.
Worcester battled back again in the ninth with an RBI single from Pedro Castellanos, but Tyler Clippard struck out Jaylin Davis with the tying run at second base to end the game at 9-8.
Rochester jumped out to a 2-0 lead with a Joey Meneses solo home run and a Riley Adams RBI double in the opening inning. Devlin Granberg hit a bases-loaded triple to give the WooSox a brief 3-2 lead in the fourth before Adams hit a solo shot to tie the game at 3-3 in the home half.
The Red Wings moved in front with a pair of sacrifice flies in the fifth and a two-run single by Adrian Sanchez in the sixth before Worcester's eighth-inning comeback.
Downs reached base in all five of his plate appearances with three walks and two singles. It was his first three-walk game since 2018.
Reliever Chase Shugart made his Triple-A debut, allowing just one baserunner through three innings with two strikeouts.
The WooSox return home to Polar Park to start a six-game homestand on Monday, featuring a spectacular UniBank Fireworks show for the Fourth of July.
