The Moose Jaw Warriors looked to the future today as they selected 9 players at the 2018 WHL Bantam Draft in Red Deer.

Looking at a positional breakdown, the Warriors selected 5 forwards (3 centre and 2 left wing), 3 defenseman, and one goaltender.

Breaking it down geographically, the Warriors drafted 4 from Saskatchewan, 2 from Manitoba, 2 from Alberta, and one from the United States.

With the 22nd overall pick in the 1st round the Warriors selected Eric Alarie (LW) from Winnipeg. Alarie, 6'0", 187lbs, played last season with the Rink Hockey Academy where he had 28 goals, 27 assists, and 55 points in 30 games. This was the 4th in the last five years that the Warriors first pick at the draft was from Manitoba.

The Warriors next pick came in the 4th round, 79th overall, they selected Josh Hoekstra (LW) from Edmonton. Last season Hoekstra, 6'0", 163lbs, played with OHA Edmonton and had 8 goals, 18 assists, and 26 points in 30 games.

In the 5th round the Warriors called Corson Ceulemans (RD) with the 100th overall pick from Beaumont, Alberta. Ceulemans, 6'0", 182lbs, played last season at OHA Edmonton and had 8 goals, 23 assists, and 31 points in 30 games.

The 6th round was a busy one for the Warriors as they made three selections. It started with the first pick of the round at 111th overall where they selected Lucas Brenton (LD). Brenton, 6'3, 160lbs, is from Winnipeg and had 9 goals, 15 assists, and 24 points in 32 games with the Winnipeg Sharks.

With their second pick of the 6th round, 123rd overall, the Warriors called Regina's Sam Boldt (RD). Boldt, 5'11, 147lbs, played last season with the Regina Monarchs and had 6 goals, 23 assists, and 29 points in 28 games.

The Warriors closed out the 6th round by snagging Moose Jaw's Kirk Mullen 132nd overall. Mullen, 6'0, 145lbs, played last season with the Prairie Hockey Academy and was the first player from the school to be selected in the WHL Bantam Draft.

In the 7th round, 154th overall, the Warriors called out Saskatoon goaltender Brett Mirwald. Mirwald, 5'10, 155lbs, spent last season with the Saskatoon Outlaws where he posted a 14-3 record with a 2.46gaa.

Moving to the 8th round, with the 172nd overall pick the Warriors drafted Keenan Allan (LC) from Warman. Allan, 5'8, 154lbs, played last season at the Rink Hockey Academy in Winnipeg and had 12 goals, 17 assists, and 29 points in 30 games.

With their final pick of the draft, the Warriors looked south of the border and drafted Trey Fechko (RC) from Eden Prairie, Minnesota in the 9th round. Last season Fechko played high school hockey with Holy Family Catholic HS Fire and had 8 goals, 6 assists, and 14 points in 25 games.

The Class of 2018 is expected to be in Moose Jaw for Warriors Development Camp coming up June 7 - 10.

In other Warriors Draft Day news...

Defenseman Alek Sukunda has committed to the Warriors and the Western Hockey League with the signing of a standard player agreement.

Sukunda, 6'1, 192lbs, was taken in the 6th round, 122nd overall. He played last season with the Vancouver NW Giant (BCMMHL) and had 5 goals, 10 assists, 15 points, and 53 penalty minutes in 36 games.

General Manager Alan Millar also announced a trade that saw the team acquire forward Nick Bowman (2000) and a 6th round pick in 2018 from the Edmonton Oil Kings in exchange for forward Vince Loschiavo (1998).

Bowman, 6'0", 185lbs, is from Sherwood Park, Alberta and was originally drafted by Edmonton in the 6th round of the 2015 WHL Bantam Draft. In 56 games last season with the Oil Kings he had six goals, six assists, and 12 points. In 117 WHL games he has 13 goals, 13 assists, and 26 points.
