Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
GARY, Ind. - The longest RailCats game ever played at U. S. Steel Yard ended on Brian Kolb's walk-off single in the bottom of the 16th, giving the 'Cats a 5-4 win over the Amarillo Sox in a game that carried into Thursday morning. The RailCats have now won six of their last eight and improve to 36-41.
Mike Massaro led off the 16th by drawing a walk against reliever Phil Bartleski. After Ryan Babineau walked, Massaro reached third on Tomochika Tsuboi's fielder's choice. With two outs and the game on the line, Brian Kolb delivered the game winning hit past Adam Buschini at second for the 'Cats second consecutive walk-off win.
Had the 16th inning ended, the game would have been postponed on resumed on Thursday at 6:10 PM, prior to the regularly scheduled series finale. The 16 inning affair was the longest RailCats home game ever at the Steel Yard and longest game since the 'Cats visited the Kansas City T-Bones on August 31, 2007. That game also went 16 innings, ending in a 6-4 RailCats win.
The 'Cats scored three in the second inning off of Sox starter Ryan Mitchell. Kenny Bryant hit a two-run single and David Cooper added a sac fly. Bryant has five RBI in his six games as a RailCat.
The Sox answered against RailCats starter Will Krout in the fourth inning. Adam Buschini hit an RBI double, Tim Alberts followed with a run-scoring single and Van Pope hit an RBI single to tie the game at three.
Amarillo appeared to take the lead in the fifth, when Garrett Rau flew out and Derrick Pyles came home to score. However, Pyles was called out after the RailCats appealed that he left third early. He was called out and the game stayed tied at 3.
The RailCats saw scoring opportunities go to waste in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, as they had two on with one out in each inning but failed to score. The game reached extra innings and the Sox finally broke the tie in the 11th. Garrett Rau led off with a single against Nolan Nicholson and went to second on a wild pitch. On a sac bunt attempt by Adam Buschini, Nicholson threw to third but Rau was safe on a close and controversial call. Tim Alberts singled to right to score Rau and make it 4-3.
In the bottom of the inning, Zac Mitchell walked against Amarillo reliever Chase Johnson and moved to second on a sacrifice by Cooper. Klein hit an RBI single to bring home Mitchell and tie the game.
Krout delivered another quality start, his sixth since joining the RailCat's rotation in late June. He went eight innings, allowing three runs on nine hits. Dexter Carter (2-3) got the win in his RailCats debut. He pitched 2 2/3 innings without allowing a hit. Carter walked one and struck out three.
The series finale between the Sox and 'Cats is Thursday night at 7:10 PM. Alberto Rolon (2-4, 7.71) will go for Gary.
