Kernels Win by 20, Pounding Peoria 23-3 with 27 Hits

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Kernels pounded the Peoria Chiefs on Monday night in the opener of the series. Cedar Rapids set a season-high in runs and hits while batting around in both the first and fourth inning. The Kernels scored 11 runs on 10 hits in the fourth inning by sending 16 men to the plate, all season-highs for a single inning. Every Kernel in the starting lineup picked up at least one hit.

Sean Miller collected five singles and drew a walk to reach base six times on the evening. He becomes the second Kernel, along with Tanner English to record a five-hit game. Edgar Corcino and T.J. White both collected five RBI, matching a team-best. In addition, White had four hits to finish a home run away from the cycle. Corcino had a home run, for one of his three hits in the game.

Austin Diemer had a perfect night at the plate, reaching in all six plate appearances. Diemer also drove in three runs with four hits as he picked up a pair of doubles, two singles, a hit by pitch and a walk. Nick Gordon, Max Murphy and Alex Real all had three hits. Brian Navarreto and Pat Kelly both recorded one hit.

Three separate Kernels scored four runs each on the night - Miller, Gordon and Diemer. The team set a season-high with seven doubles and 10 extra-base hits. Miller, Gordon, Corcino and White all had seven plate appearances, the only Kernels to bat seven times in a game this year.

Keaton Steele (5-4) was the benefactor of all the runs. He earned the win after tossing six innings, allowing two runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked one. Zack Tillery allowed one run and three hits over two innings. Nick Anderson pitched a scoreless ninth inning to finish the game.

The scoring attack began immediately in the first inning as the Kernels plated five runs on six hits, sending 10 batters to the plate. The first six batters all recorded hits, with the first seven reaching base. After Miller and Gordon singled, Corcino's RBI single to right scored the first run of the night. White's RBI single to center then scored Gordon. Murphy's two-run triple to deep center made the score 4-0. Real's RBI base hit through the left side pushed the lead to 5-0.

Jack Flaherty (8-2) went just 1/3 of an inning, facing just eight hitters and retiring one of them. He allowed five runs and six hits in the loss. Nick Lomascolo came out of the bullpen and escaped further damage.

Harrison Bader's two-run home run for Peoria in the fourth inning cut the lead to 5-2. It was Bader's sixth big fly in 41 games this season.

Cedar Rapids scored 11 runs on 10 hits while sending 16 batters to the plate in the fourth inning, pushing their lead to 16-2. The 11 runs, 10 hits and 16 plate appearances were all season-highs for a single inning this season. Diemer walked to begin the inning, later scoring the first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Miller singled while Gordon walked before White's two-run triple down the right field line made the score 9-2. White scored on one of two balks by reliever Dixon Llorens in the inning, making the score 10-2. Murphy and Real then singled, with Murphy scoring on Navarreto's RBI single. Kelly then singled to load the bases. Diemer just missed out on a grand slam, settling for a two-run double to deep left center to extend the lead to 12-2. Miller's RBI single brought in Kelly to make the score 13-2. Diemer scored on the second balk of the inning by Llorens as the Kernels took a 14-2 advantage. Gordon's RBI single plated Miller for the 10th run of the inning, giving the Kernels a 15-2 lead. Gordon scored the final run of the stanza, making the score 16-2, when White's RBI double was pulled to left.

In the fourth inning alone, White had two hits and three runs batted in. Also, Miller, Gordon and Diemer all scored two runs each. The inning featured eight consecutive hits by the Kernels, setting a new season-high. All eight hits came off Llorens.

Llorens did not record an out, allowing eight runs on eight hits. Lomascolo allowed three runs and one hit over three innings. Jery Then did not allow a run over 1 2/3 innings.

Corcino led off the sixth inning with his fourth home run as the Kernels pushed ahead 17-2. Peoria plated a run in the seventh inning when Darren Seferina's RBI single followed Jake Gronsky's double, cutting their deficit to 17-3.

Cedar Rapids took a 20-3 lead in the seventh inning. Diemer and Miller singled with one out. Gordon's RBI double scored Diemer. Miller came home on Corcino's RBI groundout. White's RBI single plated Gordon.

The Kernels extended the lead to 23-3 in the eighth inning. Real doubled before coming home on Diemer's RBI double. After Kelly was hit by a pitch and Miller walked, two more scored on Corcino's RBI double.

Peoria used three position players, out of their total of seven pitchers on the night, to get through the final three innings. Alex DeLeon allowed four runs over 1 1/3 innings. Luis Cruz gave up three runs in one inning. Jake Gronsky did not allow a run while recording two outs.

The Kernels continue the three-game series on Tuesday at 6:35 p.m. RHP Felix Jorge (6-5, 2.83) gets the start for Cedar Rapids while RHP Matt Pearce (9-10, 2.68) counters for Peoria.
