Sam Gibbons Named MWL Pitcher of the Week

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Midwest League and MiLB.com announced on Monday that Kernels pitcher Sam Gibbons has been named the MWL Pitcher of the Week for the period ending August 23rd.

Gibbons struck out 12 and allowed just one hit over 8 IP in a Kernels 2-0 win at Clinton on August 22nd. This is the second time this season that Gibbons has been named Pitcher of the Week. The Twins signed Gibbons as a international free agent on July 2, 2011 and this is his fourth season in professional baseball.

Nick Thompson of the Peoria Chiefs was named the MWL Player of the Week for the same period.

This is the second time this season that Gibbons has earned MWL weekly honors, and the eighth Kernel honored this season joining Tanner English, Felix Jorge, Stephen Gonsalves, Trey Vavra, Max Murphy and Keaton Steele.

The Kernels being a six game home stand tonight at 6:35 PM against the Peoria Chiefs with the gates opening at 5:30 PM. The current home stand continues through Saturday, August 29th.
