Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Midland, Mich. - Bowling Green opened its second leg of the extended road trip with a 4-0 defeat to the Great Lakes Loons in front of 3,356 fans at Dow Diamond on Monday night.
In falling to 0-3 on the trip, Bowling Green (26-29, 63-62) was blanked for the fifth time its last 10 road games and has lost 13 of its last 14 away from the Commonwealth. Great Lakes (24-31, 62-61) snapped a four-game skid against the Hot Rods dating back to May 31.
Great Lakes put two runs on the board in the bottom of the third inning against Hot Rods' starter Yonny Chirinos after Garrett Kennedy and Jordan Tarsovich knocked consecutive one-out singles, and Jimmy Allen loaded the bases after getting hit by a two-out pitch. Brian Wolfe followed with a bases-loaded, two-RBI single into right field to score Kennedy and Tarsovich, giving the Loons a 2-0 lead. An attempted double steal with Mike Ahmed at the plate looked to add a third run, but Jimmy Allen was thrown out trying to steal home from second baseman Alec Sole to catcher Mac James to ending the inning.
Chirinos (3-4) retired nine of the next 11 batters he faced before running into two-out trouble in the bottom of the sixth, as Justin Chigbogu delivered Wolfe with a sharp RBI single to right field, but an error by Cade Gotta also scored Beaty all the way from first, resulting in a 4-0 lead. Chirinos was taken out after 6.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on a career-high tying nine hits, walking none and striking out a career-high tying six.
Diego Castillo tossed the final 2.0 innings for Bowling Green, stranding a pair in the seventh and retiring the last six he faced.
Bowling Green forced Loons' starter Michael Boyle to throw 80 pitches over 3.2 innings, knocking four hits and accruing one walk against him - but Boyle fanned four and stranded six, as the Hot Rods went 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position against him.
Cameron Palmer (5-1) relieved Boyle with two on and two outs in the fourth and promptly induced a Cristian Toribio groundout on the first pitch, while ultimately picked up the victory via 1.1 shutout innings, issuing one walk and striking out two.
Jose Alberto Molina and Matt Campbell combined to throw the final 4.0 shutout innings, combining for three hits with five punchouts.
Hunter Lockwood led the way offensively for the Hot Rods, going 3-for-4 with three singles, but Bowling Green struck out 11 times, went 0-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base.
Brad Wallace (2-4, 4.91) toes the slab for Bowling Green in game two against Great Lakes on Tuesday at 6:05 p.m. CDT, opposing Loons' righty Tommy Bergjans (1-2, 3.58)
