TinCaps Tip Lugnuts in Opener, 3-2
August 24, 2015 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Lansing Lugnuts News Release
FORT WAYNE, IN - In a battle between the first-half Eastern Division champions and the second-half Eastern Division leaders, a Lansing Lugnuts (26-29, 68-57) ninth-inning rally fell short in a 3-2 series-opening loss against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (37-19, 69-55) on Monday night at Parkview Field.
It was the first meeting between the two clubs since May 25th, as well as the first of six games between the two teams in the next nine days.
Held to only three hits and a D.J. Davis fourth-inning RBI single through the first eight frames, the Lugs made things interesting against Fort Wayne closer Colby Blueberg.
Trailing 3-1, Chris Carlson drew a leadoff walk and Ryan McBroom - named Midwest League MVP earlier in the day - lasered a single to move his teammate to third base. Carlson was thrown out at home trying to score on a Davis grounder, and a Danny Jansen fielder's choice put the Lugnuts down to their final out.
David Harris blooped an RBI single to left-center, scoring just the fifth earned run of the year against Blueberg. Alex Maldonado worked the right-hander to a full count, but struck out looking to end the game.
Lansing starter Sean Reid-Foley (Loss, 3-5) struck out seven TinCaps in just four innings, but allowed RBI singles to Trae Santos and Franchy Cordero that proved the difference.
TinCaps starter Dinelson Lamet tossed two scoreless, hitless innings. Griffin Russell (Win, 1-0) pitched the next third through the fifth innings before yielding to Aaron Cressley for three perfect frames, setting up the ninth. Blueberg recorded his 19th save, albeit adventurously.
The Lugnuts and TinCaps play the second game in their three-game series at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, with the starting matchup featuring Lansing right-hander Justin Shafer (5-3, 3.02) opposite 'Caps right-hander Ernesto Montas (10-6, 3.50).
The Lansing Lugnuts return home on Sunday, August 30th, a 4:05 p.m. Kids Day presented by Delta Dental - Play Catch on the Field before the game, and Kids Run the Bases afterward! For more information, call (517) 485-4500 or visit lansinglugnuts.com.
