Peoria Chiefs News Release
PEORIA, IL - The Midwest League announced that Peoria Chiefs outfielder Nick Thompson was named MWL Player of the Week for the week of August 17-23. Thompson joins pitcher Austin Gomber (May 4-11) as the second Chiefs player to win a league award in 2015.
In six games this week, Thompson collected 11 hits in 24 at-bats batting .458 with two home runs, six RBI, five runs scored and two doubles. He also drew a walk and finished the week with a .480 on-base percentage and .792 slugging percentage. Thompson collected seven hits in the first two games of the week against Beloit on Tuesday and Wednesday. In the Tuesday series opener he went 3-for-3 with a grand slam, double, single and intentional walk. The next night Thompson had his first career four-hit game that included his 11th home run of the season, a double and two singles. He added a single Friday night, a first-inning RBI single on Saturday, and punctuated his week with two hits and a run scored on Sunday while also adding two outfield assists. For the season Thompson is batting .238 with 11 home runs, 17 doubles, three triples and 52 RBI. He leads the Chiefs with 12 outfield assists and in walks with 46.
With a magic number of four to clinch a playoff spot, the Chiefs start a six-game roadtrip Monday night in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at 6:35 with RH Jack Flaherty on the mound. After three games in Cedar Rapids and three more in Quad Cities, the Chiefs begin the final regular-season homestand on Sunday at 5:00 p.m. against Cedar Rapids.
