Alex Dickerson Selected to Post-Season E.L. All-Star Team
August 29, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
PORTLAND, Maine - Altoona Curve outfielder Alex Dickerson has been selected to the Eastern League post-season All-Star team, the league announced today. It is the first post-season All-Star nod for Dickerson in the Eastern League and the second overall post-season All-Star nod in his career.
Not selected to the mid-season Eastern League All-Star squad, Dickerson has a banner first season in Double-A with the Curve to follow up a 2012 season in the Florida State League that saw him win Player of the Year honors. At the time of print, Dickerson is hitting .287 with 35 doubles (team-high), 16 HR (second on the team) and a team-best 65 RBI in 121 games.
His assault on the Eastern League really began in the month of June when the Poway, Calif. native hit .300 in 26 games with nine doubles, five homers and 18 RBI. His first breakout game of the season came June 2 up in Portland when he went 3-for-4 with a pair of home runs and a career-high seven RBI in a win over the Portland Sea Dogs.
After heating up in June, Dickerson then went on fire throughout the entire month of July en route to a pair of Eastern League Player of the Week awards and eventually the league's Player of the Month award. For the month, Dickerson hit an off-the-charts .413 with 10 doubles, six homers, 27 RBI and 23 runs scored in 26 total games. The month of July also saw Dickerson top his season and career-high seven RBI from June 2 on July 26 in New Hampshire when he exploded for eight RBI while going 3-for-6 with a home run and two doubles. Those eight RBI in a single game tied a franchise high set by Alex Presley back in 2010.
Since June 1, Dickerson has hit .323, which is the third-best average in all of Double-A (Eastern, Southern and Texas Leagues) since that time, with 24 doubles, 13 homers, 50 RBI and 46 runs scored in 76 games with an OPS of .922.
Dickerson, 23, was a 3rd round selection of the Pirates in the 2011 draft out of Indiana University after completing his junior season in Bloomington. He spent his first pro season in short-season State College before moving up to High-A Bradenton in 2012 where he had a banner year en route to the Player of the Year award.
Dickerson's selection marks the fourth straight year that the Curve have had at least one player named to the post-season All-Star squad dating back to 2010.
Altoona (61-76) plays its final road game of the 2013 season at 7 p.m. tonight in Harrisburg where they'll take on the Harrisburg Senators (74-63). The Curve return to Curve, Pa. for their final homestand of 2013 beginning at 7 p.m. Friday night with Pittsburgh Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis in the house to meet and greet fans for two hours thanks to WTAJ-TV and Applied Telephony.
