LHP Caleb Smith Promoted from Staten Island

The Trenton Thunder, Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, announced Thursday that left-handed starting pitcher Caleb Smith has been promoted to the team from Short Season-A Staten Island. Reliever Diego Moreno has been placed on the team's disabled list (retroactive to 8/27) with right shoulder soreness.

Smith is slated to start for Trenton on Saturday night in game two of a doubleheader at Portland. He is the first member of the 2013 draft class to reach the Thunder.

Smith, 22, was drafted by the Yankees in the 14th round this June from Sam Houston State. In 13 appearances with Staten Island, the southpaw went 1-2 with a 1.89 ERA. He tossed 48 innings with the Yankees and allowed only 33 hits and 15 runs (10 earned).

Moreno has not pitched since August 22nd . The righty is 1-0 with a 0.96 ERA in six appearances with Trenton this season (9.1 IP, 4 H, 1 R).
