SeaWolves Rally in 11th to Spoil Aeros Home Finale
August 29, 2013 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release
Akron, OH - The Erie SeaWolves, still in contention for the EL Western Division championship, scored four runs in the top of the 11th inning Thursday night, and outlasted the Akron Aeros, 9-5, in the final home game of the season at Canal Park.
The Aeros (65-72) still have four games remaining in the regular season, all in Altoona, Pennsylvania, beginning on Friday night at 7.
It might prove to be a pivotal win for the SeaWolves, who pulled to within a half-game of first place Harrisburg in the EL West race. The Senators lost, 4-1, at home to Altoona on Thursday. The SeaWolves, meanwhile, now have a four-game lead on the Bowie Baysox for the EL West wild card playoff spot. With special kudos to the schedule makers, Erie will host Bowie in a five-game series beginning on Friday night.
In the 11th inning, the SeaWolves (73-64) batted around against righthander Trey Haley (1-4). Ramon Cabrera laced a bases-loaded double to give Erie the lead. One out later, James McCann lined a two-run single to left to make it 9-5. Cabrera
Justin Souza retired the side in order in the bottom of the 11th to end the game. The win went to Melvin Mercedes, who blew a save opportunity when he gave up a ninth inning homer to Alex Monsalve to tie the game at 5-5. Mercedes (2-1) came back to work a scoreless 10th, however, and set the stage for the SeaWolves to rally in the 11th.
The SeaWolves won three of four in the series, including two extra-inning victories. Akron finished 8-12, against the SeaWolves this season, and went 35-36 at home.
Akron held an early 4-1 lead after rallying for two runs each in the first and second against starter Kelvin Perez. Jesus Aguilar had a sacrifice fly in the first and an RBI single in the second to raise his RBI total to 103.
Erie came back to tie with two in the third and one in the seventh against Aeros starter Will Roberts. Cabrera stroked a two-run single in the third, part of his four-RBI night. In his final start of the 2013 season, Roberts went 6 2/3 innings and allowed four runs on nine hits.
Aguilar, Monsalve, Giovanny Urshela, and Tyler Naquin all had two hits apiece for the Aeros.
The Aeros will hit the road on Friday night in Altoona to begin the final series of the season. Game time is 7:05 p.m. The Aeros starting pitcher has not been announced, while RHP Nick Kingham (3-3, 2.98) will make his final start of the season for the Curve. The game will be broadcast live on 1350 AM and online at www.sportsradio1350.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at 330-253-5151.
