Orlando Solar Bears News Release

Elmira, NY - Dale Mahovsky notched three points as the Solar Bears fought back from multiple deficits to earn a point in a 6-5 overtime loss to the Elmira Jackals at First Arena on Saturday night.

Two early penalties on Orlando in the first period led to 1:07 of 5-on-3 time for the Jackals, but the Solar Bears were able to kill off the two-man advantage to maintain a 0-0 score. The Jackals were able to strike first regardless, when D Jordan Southorn tallied on a slap shot from the blue line 9:00 into the period. F Jordan Pietrus increased the lead to 2-0 a little over four minutes later when he rushed into the zone and blistered a slap shot inside the left post at 13:13. With time ticking down in the first, the Solar Bears cut the lead in half. C Ryan Cruthers led a 2-on-1 rush into the zone and moved a pass to forward C.J. Severyn, who tapped the pass into the back of the net with 1:11 left in the frame. The score remained 2-1 going into the first intermission.

The Jackals restored their two goal advantage at 12:42 of the second stanza. F Matt Carter worked a pass from behind the net to F Jean Bourbeau, and Bourbeau whipped the shot over the sprawled out G Patrick Killeen to put Elmira ahead 3-1. Orlando answered right back just 1:08 later, when F Dale Mahovsky found a rebound off a shot from F Scott Tanski and wristed the puck past G Maxime Clermont to bring the score to 3-2, which is where the two sides stood after 40 minutes of play.

An action packed third period started 3:22 into the frame, when Cruthers evened the score at 3-3 after collecting a pass from F Justin Levac and slipping a backhander into the net. Elmira broke the tie with a shorthanded marker on a 2-on-1 rush scored by F Brandon Blandina at 7:35, but once again the Solar Bears battled back to tie the game. At 12:38 of the frame, C Dale Mahovsky forced a puck just over the goal line after a scramble in front of the Elmira net, tying the game at 4-4. Four-on-four hockey resulted from the ensuing scrum after the Orlando goal, and Elmira's Chaz Johnson took advantage when he cut to the slot and fired the puck into the top left corner of the cage to give Elmria a 5-4 lead with 5:35 to play. Once again, the Solar Bears battled back, as F Rob Mignardi redirected a pass from D Michael Wilson past Clermont on the power play with 3:08 left in regulation, forcing overtime.

Just 33 seconds into the sudden death period, F Andrew Rowe got free at the bottom of the right circle and snapped the puck home to give the Jackals the eventual 6-5 win over the Solar Bears. Orlando earned a point in the game, as they refused to give up after facing four deficits of 2-0, 3-1, 4-3, and 5-4 throughout the contest.
