Special Teams Pace Titans in OT Win over Rival Reading, 4-3

January 17, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release

TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, needed overtime to upend Atlantic Division rival Reading, 4-3, early this afternoon at the Sun National Bank Center. The win ended a six game winless streak (0-6-1) for the Titans and was the second consecutive OT victory over the Royals this season.

The Royals (26-9-2-2, 56 points) started things off with a late first period goal, when a shot fired from the point by Brett Flemming was tipped in by Ian O'Connor at 18:37. The Titans responded 4:42 into the second period, as Jacob Cepis scored on the power play after he scooped up a loose puck at the top of the crease. Stephen Schultz and J. S. Berube - who had just arrived on loan from Albany - received assists.

The Titans (15-17-3-2, 35 points) took their first lead of the game with 3:45 remaining in the second, when Berube's centering pass to Andy Bohmbach was cleared behind the endline, Berube picked up the puck and shot it off of the back of Sergey Kostenko (L, 36 saves, 1-0-1-1) where it managed to trickle in for a 2-1 advantage.

The Titans went into the third period leading, 2-1, but it became short-lived, when 1:34 into third period, Reading's Nikita Kashirsky deflected a shot on a screen in front of Wedgewood (W, 26 saves, 11-11-2), knotting the game at 2-2.

The Titans regained the lead shortly after that on the power play, when Bohmbach's 17th of the season (and eighth on the PP) was a stuffed home rebound from outside the left post at 5:04 of the period. Reading once again rallied to tie the score, 9:43 into the third period, when O'Connor put home his second of the game on a delayed penalty with Kostenko pulled.

Regulation ended tied at 3-3, but not with some nervous moments for the Titans, as they had a fourth Reading power play to kill - one that crossed over into overtime. Not only were they able to do that, but they also managed to draw two Reading penalties as well. It was the second that proved to be the Royals' undoing. When Kashirsky took a goaltending interference penalty with 52 seconds left in the game, Bohmbach yet again capitalized on the power play, slipping a shot under the right pad of Kostenko with just 27 seconds left in OT. It was also his team-leading fifth game-winner.

The Titans will travel to Elmira to face the Jackals, January 18th at 7:05, and return to the Sun National Bank Center for a pair of home games against the Cincinnati Cyclones on January 19th (7:05 pm) and 20th (3:05 pm). All the games can be heard on 107.7 FM (Trenton area), 1077theBronc.com and AmericaOneSports.com, with The Voice of the Titans, "The Bronc" Daryle Dobos, calling all the action.

AFTER THE WHISTLE

With Reading's 0-4 on its PP, the Titans have stopped 39 consecutive man-advantage chances by the Royals.

Justin Taylor was stopped on a penalty shot by Kostenko with 5:05 left in regulation. It is the third penalty shot this year for Trenton (0-3). They are tied for the league lead with those three chances (UTA, CIN, IDH).

The loss is just the fifth for Reading when scoring first (17-1-2-2). It is only the fourth win for Trenton when they give up the first goal (4-14-2).

With a 3-for-6 PP effort, the Titans now have 33.6% of their scoring coming on their man advantage (36-of-107 goals).
