Monsters Fall to Heat Despite Early Advantage

Despite taking a two-goal lead in the first 8:25 of the game, the Lake Erie Monsters (4-3-0-0) fell 5-3 to the Abbotsford Heat (4-0-0-1) at Quicken Loans Arena Friday night. The Monsters have fallen in back-to-back games, and Abbotsford remains the only team in the American Hockey League's Western Conference without a regulation loss. The Monsters have a chance to rebound Saturday night at 7:30 PM against the Heat at The Q.

Paul Carey opened the scoring when he streaked up the right wing and beat Heat goalie Danny Taylor with a wrister top-shelf at 6:22 of the first period, assisted by Thomas Pock and Dean Strong. Carey's goal was his second of the season, and Pock now has a five-game point streak.

Just over two minutes later, Luke Walker banged in the rebound from an Andrew Agozzino shot at 8:25 of the first; his second of the season. Agozzino was credited with an assist, extending his point streak to five games. David van der Gulik's also assisted after his outlet pass ignited the rush.

With the Monsters on the power play at 12:36, the Heat put together an odd-man rush following a Monsters turnover, and Carter Bancks streaked up the right side and beat Monsters goalie Sami Aittokallio glove-side for the first Heat goal of the evening, and the first shorthanded goal allowed by the Monsters this season.

Roman Horak scored from the top of the goal crease for the Heat following some sharp passing to tie the game at 2-2 in the second period at 5:57. The middle frame ended with the score knotted at 2.

T.J. Brodie scored to give the Heat a 3-2 lead at 3:12 of the third period.

With the Monsters trailing by a goal, van der Gulik held the puck in the offensive end for the Monsters and caused an Abbotsford turnover with a series of hard-working plays, and Michael Sgarbossa took possession for the Monsters in front of the Heat net. Sgarbossa faked to his backhand, and slipped the puck under Taylor to tie the game 3-3 at 4:58.

Horak answered quickly, scoring on a rebound for the Heat at 5:46 of the third, and Brett Olson added one more to give Abbotsford a 5-3 lead; the game's final goal.

Aittokallio (2-1-0) stopped 18 of 23 shots in the loss for the Monsters. Taylor (3-0-1) stopped 30 of 33 for the Heat in the win.

The Monsters and Heat meet again Saturday night at 7:30 PM, with the action being carried live on Newstalk 1420 WHK and FOX Sports Ohio.
