Providence Bruins News Release

Providence, RI -- The Providence Bruins fell to the Springfield Falcons 3-0 in their second home game this evening at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Niklas Svedberg stopped 26 shots and the Bruins put up 33 shots on the opposing goaltender Curtis McElhinney.

The first period opened with pressure from both sides. Providence had seven of their 10 shots on goal with the man advantage with their best chances coming from a 5-on-3 in the middle of the period. After setting up in front of the net, Jordan Caron just missed the net and rang the crossbar. Providence had their own 5-on-3 to kill off late in the period but Springfield took advantage and scored eight seconds in to make it 1-0. Shortly after killing off the remaining power play, there was a pile up in front of both benches with Garnet Exelby and Chris Bourque roughing up a couple Springfield players resulting in a roughing minor for Exelby and roughing double minor for Bourque. The period came to an action packed close as Svedberg made a save and took a hit from a Falcons player. Captain Trent Whitfield exchanged a few punches with Cody Bass as a result with penalties carrying over into the middle frame.

The second period opened with 4-on-4 hockey before another man advantage for Providence but they could not find the back of the net. Springfield scored nearly two minutes in the period to put the Bruins down by two goals. Bass took on another Providence player almost midway through the period when he dropped the gloves with Lane MacDermid before MacDermid took him down. Both teams kept firing pucks on their opposing goaltenders and the Falcons almost made it 3-0 with about nine minutes to go but the goal was scored after a whistle and was waved off. The Bruins did not falter and kept up their effort putting 14 shots on goal in the period and holding the Falcons to just five.

Springfield put Svedberg to the test in the beginning of the final period quickly getting second shots in seven minutes. Torey Krug tried for his first goal of the season with three nice shots in one shift but kept getting turned away by McElhinney. The Falcons made it 3-0 at 10:57 with a goal tapped in to Svedberg's left. Despite putting up a season high 33 shots, Providence could not get on the board and fell 3-0 to Springfield. Svedberg made 26 saves and suffered his first loss.
