Bridgeport Islanders News Release

WORCESTER, Mass. - The Worcester Sharks scored three times in the second period and never looked back as they defeated the Bridgeport Sound Tigers 5-1 at DCU Center in Worcester on Friday night. With the win, the Sharks improve to 1-3-0-1. The Sound Tigers drop their first game of the season as their record moves to 3-1-0-0.

Physical play dictated the opening 20 minutes of play, highlights by a fight between Sound Tigers forward Brett Gallant and Worcester's Jimmy Bonneau. The Sound Tigers best scoring chance came midway through the period when Casey Cizikas forced a turnover in the Worcester zone and found David Ullstrom in the slot. However, Ullstrom fired high over the net, as the two sides remained scoreless after the first period.

The Sharks came alive in the second period with three goals and scored the first of their three tallies just 29 seconds into the middle frame. Worcester entered the Sound Tigers zone on an odd-man rush, and Sharks forward Tim Kennedy beat Kevin Poulin from the slot to give the home team a 1-0 lead. The Sharks increased their lead to two at 9:20 of the period when Curt Gogol took a feed in the slot from Kennedy and one-timed a blast past Poulin. Sena Acolatse gave the Sharks a 3-0 advantage when Sena Acolatse's shot from the left point deflected off a Sound Tiger through Kevin Poulin with 4:12 remaining in the second period.

Brock Nelson brought the Sound Tigers within a goal midway through the third period. Just as a Sound Tigers power play expired, Jon Landry sent a pass from the left point down to Nelson in the right circle. Nelson fired into the open net past Stalock for his second tally of the season and the Sound Tigers trailed 3-1 with 11:04 left in regulation. However, Worcester put the game away with two late power play goals. During a 5-on-3 Worcester power play, Jon Matsumoto put a one-timer from the right post past Poulin at 18:32 of the third period. Bracken Kearns rounded out the scoring 30 seconds later, scoring in nearly identical fashion to Stalberg, one-timing a shot from the right post through Poulin.

Alex Stalock made 17 saves to earn Worcester's first win of the 2012-13 season. Kevin Poulin made 25 saves in the loss.

The Sound Tigers continue their three-in-three Massachusetts road trip tomorrow when they travel to the MassMutual Center to face the Springfield Falcons at 7:00 p.m.
