CLINTON, Iowa-2012 first-round draft choice Kyle Zimmer earned his first victory as a member of the Kane County Cougars in a 5-0 triumph over the Clinton LumberKings on Friday night at Ashford University Field.

Zimmer (1-2) chalked up a career-high 10 strikeouts while recording 6.2 shutout innings and limiting the LumberKings (52-63, 29-18) to only three hits. Clinton never had a man reach third base. Neither team scored a run until the top of the seventh inning when the Cougars (58-59, 24-23) broke through against reliever Josh Corrales (3-4).

Alex Llanos began the frame with a double before advancing to third base on a sacrifice bunt from Julio Aparicio. Henry Moreno gave Kane County a 1-0 lead with a sac fly to bring home Llanos. In the eighth, the Cougars added to the advantage with four runs. Justin Trapp cracked his second triple of the night before scoring on a bunt single from Dean Espy.

Espy and Danny Mateo crossed the dish when Llanos blasted a two-bagger to right-center, putting the Cougars up by four. Aparicio capped the scoring with a sac fly to score Llanos. Malcom Culver replaced Zimmer with two outs in the seventh and struck out Guillermo Pimentel. Culver didn't allow a runner in his 1.1 innings. Cody Fassold worked around a one-out double in the ninth to preserve the shutout.
