Quad Cities River Bandits News Release

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Beloit Snappers third baseman A.J. Pettersen hit a go-ahead single in the ninth inning, and the Quad Cities River Bandits left the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning in a 2-1 loss Friday night in front of 5,369 at Modern Woodmen Park, where the home team was swept for the first time since Wisconsin took three straight as visitors May 1-3, 2011.

After Beloit designated hitter Stephen Wickens singled to lead off the top of the ninth against right-hander Heath Wyatt (4-4), catcher Jairo Rodriguez laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Wickens to second. Shortstop Tyler Grimes was then retired on a chopper back to the mound. With two outs, Beloit third baseman A.J. Petterson singled off the glove of a leaping shortstop Matt Williams to score Wickens and give the Snappers their first lead of the game.

In the bottom of the ninth, the River Bandits (22-25 second half, 57-59 overall) got a leadoff single from left fielder Anthony Garcia, who went to second base on a sacrifice by designated hitter Anthony Melchionda. Left-hander Corey Williams (3-4) then walked first baseman Jeremy Patton before leaving with the tying and winning runs on base and one out. Right-hander Zach Jones came on to walk second baseman Luis Mateo and load the bases. But Jones got right fielder Nick Martini to strike out looking and catcher Casey Rasmus to pop out to left fielder Drew Leachman for the final out.

Rasmus had opened the scoring in the bottom of the fifth inning. With one out, he connected on a pitch from left-hander David Hurlbut for his first professional home run - a solo shot deep to right field that put the River Bandits ahead, 1-0. After the home run, the southpaw retired the next two batters to end the inning - which began a string of nine consecutive Quad Cities hitters retired until center fielder Nick Longmire singled with one out in the eighth.

Hurlbut did not factor into the decision but allowed just a lone run in seven innings of work on six hits while striking out five. He did not walk a batter. Williams entered to start the bottom of the eighth and allowed two hits and one walk with one strikeout in 1 1/3 innings.

Beloit (25-22, 64-53) tied the game in the top of the eighth inning on a two-out RBI single by left fielder Drew Leachman that scored center fielder Wang-Wei Lin, who drew a walk off right-hander Robert Stock earlier in the inning. Leachman's hit against Wyatt was the reliever's sixth blown save of the season.

Right-hander Boone Whiting started for to Quad Cities, where he pitched for the entire 2011 season. In his first start following an injury rehab assignment, he lasted four innings while allowing two hits and striking out three.

Right-hander Tyrell Jenkins (3-4) takes the mound for Quad Cities in the series opener against Burlington on Saturday at 7 p.m. and will be opposed by Burlington right-hander Drew Granier (11-7).
