South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
The South Bend Silver Hawks (59-58, 24-23) capitalized on a two-out throwing error from Bowling Green's Tyler Goeddel in the ninth inning and edged the Hot Rods 2-1 Friday at Bowling Green Ballpark. The Silver Hawks earned a series win against Bowling Green and wrapped up a 4-3 road trip.
With Lake County's loss against Great Lakes, the Silver Hawks are one game out in the second half wild card chase.
Kaleb Fleck (3-2) earned the win out of the bullpen for South Bend, recording the final five outs of the game. The right-hander walked one, struck out two and induced an inning-ending double play in the eighth inning.
With the game tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, Eric Groff started a one-out rally with a double over the head of centerfielder Kes Carter. With two outs and Groff still at second, Niko Gallego hit a soft roller to third base, inducing an errant throw from Goeddel. The ball went past first baseman Cameron Seitzer and allowed Groff to score the go-ahead run.
South Bend took the early lead in the first inning on an RBI double from Ryan Court. The Hot Rods tied the game in the last of the first on an RBI groundout from Juniel Querecuto.
Right-hander Tyler Green started for South Bend and did not factor in the decision, allowing one earned run on six hits over as many innings. Righty Frank Santana tossed 1.1 scoreless innings out of the Silver Hawks bullpen.
It was a night of missed opportunities for the Hot Rods who left 1 1 men on base and finished 0-for-15 with runners in scoring position. With the bases loaded and one out in the last of the eighth inning, Goeddel grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Bryan Henry finished 2-for-4 for the Silver Hawks while Kerry Jenkins extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a 1-for-4.
The Silver Hawks return home tomorrow to begin a three-game series with the Lake County Captains. Left-hander Keith Hessler (1-1, 2.56) starts for South Bend and he'll be opposed by right-hander Mason Radeke (5-5, 3.67). First pitch is on tap for 7:05 p.m. EST. Tickets are available for purchase by calling 235-9988 or online at www.silverhawks.com.
