Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The LumberKings ran into a buzz saw in Kyle Zimmer on Friday night at Ashford University Field. The Kansas City Royals' 5th overall pick in the 2012 June draft struck out ten in 6 2/3 innings as the Cougars avoided the sweep with a 5-0 win.

Zimmer and Clinton starter Bobby Shore were locked in a pitchers duel in the first six innings. Neither would blink as Shore pitched six shutout innings of his own. He allowed five hits and did not walk a batter as he racked up ten strikeouts for the second straight start. He took a tough no decision as his ERA dropped to 1.45.

Josh Corrales relieved Shore in the seventh inning and promptly allowed a lead off double to Alex Llanos. Julio Aparicio bunted Llanos to third and reached first on Dan Paolini's fielding error. After Corrales struck out Tim Ferguson for the first out in the inning, Henry Moreno lifted a fly ball deep enough to score Llanos and give Kane County a 1-0 lead.

The Cougars broke the game open in the eighth inning when they scored four more runs against Corrales. Justin Trapp led off the inning with a triple and scored on Dean Espy's bunt single. Llanos was at it again when he followed with a 2-run double to right center that gave Kane County a 4-0 lead. They capped off their scoring on Aparicio's sac fly to deep right.

Clinton won the three-game series and holds a four-game lead over the Burlington Bees and a five-game lead over Kane County. The LumberKings head to Wisconsin and Kane County for a six-game road trip with three games at each stop. Right-hander Mayckol Guaipe (3-0, 3.19) gets the ball for Clinton in game one against Wisconsin right-hander Chad Pierce (5-4, 3.67). First pitch from Time Warner Cable Field is scheduled for 6:35 PM.
