Greenville Drive News Release
Greenville, SC - With an 11:05 AM start time on Wednesday, Fluor Field was home to summer camps and businesspeople from around Greenville. Luckily for those playing hooky from work, they got to return to the office quickly, as the Greenville Drive (53-65) defeated the Charleston RiverDogs (56-50) 3-2 in a nice, neat low-scoring game.
Henry Owens put together a solid start for the Drive and improved his record to 11-4. He went five innings, allowing one run on five hits while punching out seven hitters. Nate Striz threw the final two frames and recorded a pair of strikeouts to pick up his fifth save of the year. Matt Bashore (1-4) took the loss for Charleston, allowing three runs in five innings of work.
The RiverDogs struck first with a run off Owens in the top of the first. Cito Culver led off the game with a single to center and promptly swiped second base. He advanced to third on a groundout and came home to score on Ben Gamel's single to right.
The Drive got all of their runs on the afternoon in the bottom of the second. Boss Moanaroa and Drew Turocy hit back-to-back singles with one out. After a groundout advanced the runners 90 feet, Bashore uncorked a wild pitch that scored Moanaroa and sent Turocy to third. Nick Natoli then drew a walk, and Bryan Johns snuck a double down the left-field line to bring both runners home.
The RiverDogs scored their only other run of the afternoon in the top half of the sixth, when Ali Castillo rudely greeted new Drive pitcher Matty Ott with a solo home run over the left field wall.
Garin Cecchini was the lone Drive batter to record two hits, while Johns added a pair of RBIs. For the RiverDogs, Gamel, Nick McCoy and Reymond Nunez collected two hits apiece.
These two teams will wrap up the series at Fluor Field on Thursday night. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05. RHP Mike McCarthy (2-4, 4.18) gets the call for Greenville, while Charleston will send RHP Brett Gerritse (3-5, 3.88) to the mound.
Tomorrow is Dollar Drink Night at the ballpark, where fans of all ages can purchase 12 ounce Pepsi products at any of the concession stands for just $1. Those fans at least 21-years-old can head over to the 500 Club for $1 cans of PBR and karaoke.
