Iowa Cubs News Release

DES MOINES, IA -The Cubs were swept by Omaha falling 5-2 in a pitcher's duel Wednesday afternoon at Principal Park. Rodrigo Lopez tossed six innings of three-run ball, surrendering eight hits and no walks while striking out six for his second quality start of the season. Despite the solid outing, Lopez suffered the tough luck loss. Doug Davis improved to 1-1 on the season.

Jason Bourgeois led off the third inning with an infield single and had thievery on his mind, but Geovany Soto had other plans. The Cubs (29-38) catcher gunned down Bougeois at second just in time because Irving Falu launched a home run to right on the next pitch to give Omaha (42-25) an early 1-0 lead.

Blake Lalli took over where Anthony Rizzo left off at first base, belting a solo shot to tie the game in the fifth inning at one. Omaha regained the lead an inning later, sprinkling four singles in the sixth. Both Storm Chaser runners came with two down in the inning to expand their lead to two.

Soto caught five innings in his third appearance and second start behind the plate during his rehab stint in Iowa. The backstop went 1-for-2 with a double off the base of the left field wall in the fourth. Not to be outdone, Juan Apodaca entered the game for Soto and hit a double of his own in the sixth. He and Valbuena had back-to-back two-baggers to cut the Omaha lead to one and knock Storm Chasers starter, and former I-Cub, Doug Davis out of the game.

The Cubs could not cash in with two on and one down though, failing to plate any runs off reliever Jeremy Jeffress in the sixth. Mike Dougal hurled 1.1 innings of relief, surrendering one unearned run on two infield singles, a walk, and a strikeout. Omaha padded their lead in the eighth, taking advantage of a throwing error by Juan Apodaca on a successful double steal with MacDougal on the mound.

Jeff Beliveau stranded two inherited runners from MacDougal later in the inning, retiring the only two batters he faced to hold the Storm Chasers lead at 4-2. Rafael Dolis' lead off walk in the ninth came around to score after a stolen base, a balk, and a single cushion the Omaha lead. Iowa's offense struggled in the loss, going just 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position.

Iowa begins their final series of the 13-game home stand tomorrow as the Albuquerque Isotopes visit Principal Park. Brooks Raley, coming off a complete game shutout, will try to duplicate his previous performance when he takes the hill Wednesday against Albuquerque's Will Savage (8-3). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 with the On Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 p.m.
