Sox Let Early Lead Slip in 13-5 Loss to Reno

For the second straight game, the Colorado Springs Sky Sox (30-36) let an early lead slip away and the Reno Aces (40-27) bats came alive after being shut down for the first three innings of the game to score 13 runs in a 13-5 loss by the Sox in the series finale.

Colorado Rockies All-Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki joined the Sox in the game as part of a Major League rehab assignment, and got the Colorado Springs offense going in the first with a two-run shot to left field for his first home run in five career games with the Sky Sox. Tulowitzki left the game after collecting his second hit of the game in the third inning, and will be reevaluated by the Rockies as he returned to Denver following the game.

Tulowitzki's homer was part of the Sky Sox jumping out to a 4-0 lead after three innings against Diamondbacks top pitching prospect Trevor Bauer, but Reno finally got to Colorado Springs starter Drew Pomeranz (2-4, 3.06 ERA) and the rest of the Sky Sox staff by scoring 13 unanswered runs in the fourth through the seventh innings. The Aces tied the game with four runs in the fourth and fifth, then batted around in two consecutive innings in the sixth and seventh to score nine runs and put the game out of reach for the Sky Sox. Reno was led by center-fielder A.J. Pollock's five RBI in the game, who also scored two runs, and third baseman Ryan Wheeler's three RBI which moves his league-leading RBI total to 61 on the season.

After Colorado Springs allowed just one run in the first game of the series, the Aces scored 13 runs in back-to-back games to up their Pacific Coast League-leading run total to 434 runs this season. The 26 runs allowed by the Sky Sox are the most in consecutive games this season, and the two losses move Colorado Springs to 9.5 games back of Reno in the Pacific Northern Division.

The Sky Sox went 4-7 in their eleven-game homestand, and now travel to Las Vegas for their third series with the 51s already this season before returning home for an eight-game homestand starting June 19. In the first game of the series, the Sky Sox will send out right-hander Carlos Torres (2-3, 3.27 ERA) to match up with Las Vegas righty Andrew Carpenter (4-1, 4.01 ERA) at 8:05 p.m. MT.
