Today's Game-- The RedHawks and Zephyrs meet in the rubber match of this series as well as their recent seven-game stretch at 11:30 a.m. The RedHawks are 2-2 in games with morning start times this season.
Last Night-- The RedHawks scored 10 runs over the course of five innings and Paul Clemens earned his sixth win in his last seven starts as the RedHawks took a 10-7 victory over the Zephyrs. Mike Hessman opened the scoring with a long home run out to left field in the second inning. Three more followed in the third to give the RedHawks a 4-0 lead. The Zephyrs took the lead in the bottom of the inning. Trailing 4-1, Mike Cervenak knocked a two-run double, and Nick Green followed with a go-ahead two-run homer. After two in the fourth, Jimmy Paredes came through with a two-run, two-out single in the fifth to make it 8-5. A two-run double in the sixth by J.B. Shuck gave the RedHawks their largest lead of the game at 10-5. In the bottom of the inning, Kevin Mattison sent a line drive off the right field foul pole for a two-run homer, pulling the Zephyrs within three. Outside of a bumpy third inning, Clemens (8-4) pitched well, holding the Zephyrs scoreless with two hits over his other four innings. Fernando Abad went the final 1.1 innings for his second save.
Today's Probable Pitchers-- Wes Musick makes the start and will pitch for the first time in eight days...In his last start June 5 against Iowa, Musick allowed two earned runs over six effective and efficient innings...Musick retired the final 10 hitters he faced and did not allow any of the final 13 to reach safely...He threw just 69 pitches, including 47 for strikes, but had to be lifted for a pinch hitter...Three of his four starts with the RedHawks have been quality starts...He has thrown about two-third of his pitches for strikes and has not walked a hitter in his last 15.0 IP...Musick has also played for High-A Lancaster and Double-A Corpus Christi this year, going a combined 4-3 with a 3.04 ERA in 12 appearances (10 starts) over the three stops...New Orleans pitcher Alex Sanabia was very instrumental in ending the RedHawks' 14-game home winning streak last Friday...Sanabia allowed just one run and five hits over seven strong innings to earn his first wim since April 27...After giving up a run in the fourth, he retired 12 of the final 14 batters he faced...The start marked the fifth time in 12 starts he went at least seven innings...In five starts at home, Sanabia is 3-1 with a 2.70 ERA...He's allowed just two walks in 30 innings at Zephyr Field and his 1.47 walks per nine innings is third-best in the PCL...His 3.48 ERA also ranks ninth.
Joltin' Jimmy-- For the third time in four games, Jimmy Paredes collected four hits in a game. He's now accomplished the feat five times this season. Along with Tyler Rahmatulla of Low-A Quad Cities, Paredes is the only player in all of the Minors with 12 hits over the last four days. His .333 average is also the best among switch hitters in the PCL (ninth overall).
Hessman The Hammer-- Mike Hessman hit the eighth homer of his last eight games yesterday. He ranks second in the PCL with 18 home runs and he is also second in slugging percentage (.665). He currently averages one home run every 8.94 at-bats. In addition, Hessman has already surpassed the 2011 team leader Koby Clemens, who hit 16 homers. His 347 career Minor League dingers are best among active players.
Leaving The Park-- After being held to no homers Friday-Saturday, the RedHawks have hit five HR the last three games. They lead the league with 77 for the season. Last year the team finished dead last with just 88 homers.
Barnes' Bat-- Outfielder Brandon Barnes has been hot since joining the RedHawks on May 27. He's hit safely in 14 of 15 games, and he is hitting .378 (17x45) with six RBIs during his current 12-game hitting streak. Yesterday he surpassed Justin Ruggiano for the longest hitting streak by a RedHawk this season.
Super Snyder-- Brad Snyder is currently on a season-best 10-game hitting streak, hitting .421 (16x38) with one home run and nine RBIs. He is the sixth RedHawk to have a hitting streak of double digit length this season.
June Boon-- Angel Sanchez is hitting .441 in June (15x34) and has nine RBIs. He's had a multi-hit game in four of his last seven contests and has raised his season average by nearly 30 points since the calendar turned past May.
Rare Whiff-- J.B. Shuck struck out for just the 10th time this season last night. He is averaging just one strikeout per 16.9 plate appearances. It would easily be the lowest strikeout rate in the PCL, but Shuck is seven plate appearances shy of being able to qualify.
Walking This Way-- In six games against the Zephyrs, the RedHawks are averaging 5.03 walks per nine innings. Against the rest of the PCL, they only issue 2.7 walks per nine.
Telling a Storey-- After having to make a couple of spot starts for the RedHawks, reliever Mickey Storey has allowed one run over his last 10.2 innings (solo HR). He's scattered six hits and also struck out nine over that time.
Against the Zephyrs-- Today is the finale of seven straight games these teams are playing against each other...They are also in a stretch where they square off in 16 of 35 games...Last season the RedHawks dropped nine of 15 against the Zephyrs, hitting just .229 and were shutout three times, but held their own winning three of seven at Zephyr Field...It's been an offensive series so far, with each team averaging over seven runs per game...The RedHawks are hitting .340, and the Zephyrs have hit .306 as a team.
