Great Lakes Loons News Release

COMSTOCK PARK, MI - James Baldwin hit 10 home runs last season for Ogden, including two in his fifth game of the season.

This year, it took him 48 games, but he finally connected Monday night in the Great Lakes Loons' 11-6 setback against the West Michigan Whitecaps.

Baldwin's two-run shot to right field in the second inning gave the Loons a short-lived lead at 3-2. He finished the game with two extra base hits and three RBIs.

However, after the Loons took the lead on Baldwin's second inning shot, the Whitecaps rallied for two in the bottom of the second and never trailed from that point.

The Whitecaps led 5-3 when the Loons made a scoring push in the top of the seventh. Pratt Maynard led off with a double, followed with one out by a double by Baldwin to make the score 5-4. Baldwin advanced to third on an errant pickoff throw by pitcher Kyle Ryan. The next batter Kevin Taylor hit a ground ball to first base with the infield in. Jeff Holm fired home and just barely nipped Baldwin at the plate attempting to score the tying run.

The Loons failed to score in the inning and the Whitecaps proceeded to plate five in the bottom of the seventh.

Pedro Guerrero brought home the Loons' final two runs of the game with an eighth inning bases loaded double.

Gustavo Gomez (4-6) surrendered five runs on seven hits in three innings to take the loss. Matt Laney followed with three scoreless relief innings but was charged with three runs that scored in the seventh. Joel Lima allowed two inherited runners to score in the seventh and three of his own over 1 2/3 innings.

Ryan (3-2) picked up the win. He pitched into the seventh inning but was charged with six runs

Joe Winker notched three hits to lead the Loons' 11-hit attack. West Michigan recorded 15 hits, including three each by Steven Moya and Jason Krizan.

The Loons (30-34) conclude the first half of the season with six straight home games beginning Tuesday with the first of three games against the Dayton Dragons (27-37). Game time Tuesday is 7:05pm. Lefty Jarret Martin (2-4, 4.13 ERA) is scheduled to start for the Loons against righty Stalin Gerson (3-4, 4.18). The first 1,000 fans will receive a figurine of the 2011 National League Cy Young Award winner, Clayton Kershaw, presented by ESPN 100.9-FM. Tickets are available at Loons.com or 989-837-BALL.

The Great Lakes Loons are a sixth-year Single-A partner of the Los Angeles Dodgers and are in the middle of their 5th Anniversary Celebration, which kicked off in August 2011 and will continue throughout the 2012 season. For more information about the Loons, visit Loons.com or call 989-837-BALL.
