Evansville Otters News Release
(EVANSVILLE, Indiana) endash The Evansville Otters re-signed shortstop Greg Fontenot today and also traded for outfielder Deangelo Mack.
Fontenot played for the Evansville Otters last season as a rookie from the University of Louisiana - Lafayette. The infielder hit .257, stole 13 bases and set the team single season record for sacrifice bunts with 19.
"Greg did well after joining the team last year,"said Evansville's Director of Player Personnel Kevin Cope. "He is solid defensively and does a good job with the bat."
Fontenot was finishing the spring season as a baseball coach, but is now ready to play baseball professionally again.
"I am looking forward to Fontenot coming back," said manager Andy McCauley. "He will give us some flexibility with our lineup because he can play all three infield positions and is a tough out at the plate."
The Otters also received outfielder Deangelo Mack in a trade today with the Somerset Patriots. The transaction is for a player to be named later.
Mack is an experienced outfielder who was selected by the New York Yankees in the 13th round of the 2009 MLB Draft. The left-handed hitter reached as high as Double-A Trenton last season before joining Somerset this spring.
"Deangelo has a lot of experience in the outfield," added Cope. "He is a corner outfielder that has some power in his bat. We look for him to come in and help the lineup."
The Evansville pitching staff has been doing very well this season, leading the league in ERA (1.45) and in strikeouts (67), but the offense is hitting just .242 as a team. Mack is expected to come in and assist that lineup in a number of categories.
"Deangelo will be a middle of the lineup guy that plays all three outfield spots," said the Otters manager. "It will give us another proven left handed bat in the lineup."
Evansville also released 1B/DH Nick Farnsworth this afternoon as well.
The Otters open a new series at the Joliet Slammers tonight. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at Silver Cross Field as the Otters travel to visit the 2011 Frontier League Champions.
