Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The West Virginia Power walked off with a 3-2 win over the Greenville Drive in ten innings on Friday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The Power needed a late rally to tie the game and won it on a wild pitch in extra innings.
Greenville starting pitcher Matt Barnes held the West Virginia bats in check over the game's first five innings, allowing one hit while striking out seven and walking none. Jodaneli Carvajal's first inning double was the lone Power base hit prior to the eighth.
The Drive took a 1-0 lead in the third on a sacrifice fly from Blake Swihart that brought home Jose Garcia. Greenville added a run in the fourth off of West Virginia starter Zac Fuesser without the benefit of a base hit. Kuery De La Cruz walked to lead off the inning and then moved to third on an errant pickoff throw to first by Fuesser. De La Cruz scored one batter later on an infield groundout to build a 2-0 Drive lead.
West Virginia had chances offensively due to four Greenville errors, but could not capitalize on them against Barnes or reliever Jason Garcia. To start the eighth, Kirk Singer walked on five pitches, but Garcia struck out the next two batters. Willy Garcia then hit a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall to give the Power their second hit and tie the game at two.
Each team had a base runner in the ninth, but didn't score. Greenville also stranded two in the top of the tenth. With Garcia working into his fifth inning of relief, Alen Hanson doubled down the right field line with one out in the bottom of the tenth. After an infield single by Carvajal moved Hanson to third, Jason Garcia threw a wild pitch off of Swihart's mitt to bring in the winning run for a 3-2 final.
Fuesser pitched four innings and allowed both runs, one of which was earned, while walking five and striking out three. Robbie Kilcrease, Rinku Singh, and Emmanuel De Leon (1-1) followed for the Power with six combined scoreless innings of relief. Garcia (0-1) was charged with a blown save in the eighth before taking the loss.
Willy Garcia's home run was his first of the season and third in two games for the Power at Appalachian Power Park. The pitching staff has also fared well at home during that span, seeing the club's ERA lowered from 6.75 to 5.19 in two days.
West Virginia's win was their second straight and opened a 20-18 lead in the all-time series with Greenville dating back to 2005. This series continues on Saturday at 7:05 p.m. West Virginia's Zack Dodson will make his second start of the season against Greenville's Madison Younginer.
