Binghamton Evens Series with 7-2 Win
July 19, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Portland Sea Dogs News Release
Portland, Maine- Chih-Hsien Chiang collected his 68th career double to establish a new franchise record but it was not enough as the Binghamton Mets defeated the Portland Sea Dogs 7-2 Tuesday night at Hadlock Field to even the series at one game apiece before a crowd of 6,012.
The Sea Dogs boast the league's second best batting average at .274 but Brandon Moore (7-7) held the powerful offense to one run on six hits in six innings of work to earn his team leading seventh win.
Salomon Manriquez and Raul Reyes hit back-to-back doubles off Michael Lee (1-5) in the second to jump out to the 1-0 lead. The Mets added an unearned off Lee in the third when Jordany Valdespin (3-for-5) doubled, advanced to third on a throwing error by centerfield Jeremy Hazelbaker and scored on a Josh Satin ground out to shortstop.
Lee went three innings allowing three runs (two earned) on three hits before giving way to Junichi Tazawa. An error and two hits off Tazawa lead to a run when Manriquez scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Brahiam Maldonado as Binghamton took a 3-0 lead.
Tazawa would settle down and retire ten straight before Valdespin singled with two outs in the seventh. Tazawa would end up throwing four strong innings yielding one run on three hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out two.
The Sea Dogs were finally able to get on the scoreboard in the sixth winning when Tim Federowicz and Oscar Tejeda collected back-to-back doubles. Portland added another run in the eighth when Chiang ripped his franchise record 68th double surpassing Brandon Moss's 67 (2005 & 2006) and scored on a Federowicz RBI single.
A three run triple by Maldonado off Kyle Fernandes in the eighth provided more than enough insurance for the Mets victory.
The Sea Dogs will conclude the homestand with a 12:00 noon start on Wednesday against the Mets. Righty Brock Huntzinger (5-7, 6.69) will get the nod for the Sea Dogs. Binghamton will send lefty Robert Carson (2-8, 4.35) to the hill. Tickets are available and can be purchased by calling the Sea Dogs Ticket Office at 207-874-9300 or online at www.seadogs.com.
Travel Alert: Fans attending Tuesday night's game should be aware that Congress Street Inbound to Saint John Street will be closed from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Suggested alternate routes are available at www.seadogs.com.
