Packer Pitches Aeros Past Curve
July 19, 2011 - Eastern League (EL1)
Altoona Curve News Release
AKRON, Ohio - Matt Packer made his fifth start of the season against the Altoona Curve and it was by far his best as Packer went eight shutout innings for the Aeros, en route to a 6-0 win in game two at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio on Tuesday night.
For the second straight game in this series the Aeros got on the scoreboard first, this time, in the bottom half of the second inning. Packer worked out of a bases loaded jam in the first and then in the bottom of the second, after back-to-back strikeouts, Kyle Bellows doubled and then was brought in on a single by John Drennen to take a, 1-0, lead.
Both starting pitchers worked well in the third and fourth, but in the fifth, Mike Colla, allowed a single, double and walk to load the bases before a run scored on a groundout, and a three-run home run by Beau Mills ballooned the lead and made it a 5-0 ballgame. After Colla loaded the bases after the home run, he exited in favor of Tim Alderson. Colla (4-7) went 4.1 innings and allowed five earned on six hits and he takes the loss.
Alderson worked out of the fifth inning with a strikeout, and allowed one run in the sixth to push the advantage for the home team to 6-0. He pitched a clean seventh before Michael Dubee worked a scoreless eighth inning for Altoona.
After working out of the jam in the first, Packer was fantastic and went from the second through the sixth with 1-2-3 innings. The seventh would have been one as well if it hadn't been for an error and he tossed a perfect eighth inning to end his night. All told, Packer (4-9) went a season-high eight innings and allowed no runs on two hits with seven strikeouts and one walk.
In the ninth, Rob Bryson made his season debut for the Aeros and he preserved the two-hit shutout on Tuesday night.
With the loss, the Curve fall to 0-7-2 in their last nine series as they will have to wait until they're home against New Britain on Thursday to try and win their first series in more than a month.
The Curve (39-56) and the Aeros (51-46) will finish their three-game series on Wednesday. For the Curve, RHP Kyle McPherson (3-3, 3.26) will make the start and he will be opposed by the fifth overall selection in the 2010 draft, LHP Drew Pomeranz (0-0, 1.93). Game time is set for 12:05 p.m. at Canal Park in Akron, Ohio with pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network will begin at 11:35 a.m.
