New Britain Rock Cats News Release

NEW BRITAIN, CT - Richmond's Sharlon Schoop and Charlie Culberson each had three hits - with Culberson's all coming all doubles - to lead the Flying Squirrels past the Rock Cats, 7-5 on Tuesday night.

The Flying Squirrels pounded out 13 hits on the night with four batters turning in multi-hit games. The first hit came in the first inning when Richmond took an early 1-0 advantage. Rock Cats starter Steve Hirschfeld retired the first two batters he faced before Roger Kieschnick lined a triple to right field. Chris Dominquez followed with a grounder to second baseman Yangervis Solarte for what appeared to be an inning-ender but the routine grounder rolled under Solarte's glove. Kieschnick scored on the error.

Richmond tacked on three more runs in the third. Culberson and Dominquez each delivered RBI doubles and Wes Hodges added an RBI single for the 4-0 lead.

Wilmin Rodriguez held the Rock Cats scoreless until Deibinson Romero drilled a solo homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the third. In the fifth, the `Cats cut the lead in half when Mike Hollimon singled and scored on a base hit by Joe Benson.

Culberson clubbed his second RBI double of the game in the seventh that plated Juan Perez, who had led off the inning with a ground-rule double to right field. Culberson's hit knocked Hirschfeld out of the game. Hirschfeld (6-6) finished with four earned runs on nine hits through 6 1/3 innings.

The Rock Cats made some noise in the bottom of the seventh. Brian Dozier led off with a single to left and moved to second on a wild pitch by Edwin Quirarte. Hollimon lined out to shortstop before Romero drew a walk. With Benson at bat, Quirarte unleashed another wild pitch that allowed both runners to move into scoring position. Benson then walked to load the bases with one out. That sent Quirarte to the showers and brought Alex Hinshaw to the mound. Hinshaw fired a wild pitch while facing his first batter that allowed Dozier to score from third. Chris Herrmann reached on another walk to load the bases again but Hinshaw rebounded to strike out the next two batters to escape the jam.

Ryan Lomard delivered an RBI single and Perez added a sacrifice RBI in the eighth for the Flying Squirrels. Richmond had a chance at another run in the ninth when Culberson led off the inning with his third double of the night and attempted to score on a fielder's choice later in the inning but was thrown out at the plate.

The `Cats made it interesting in the bottom of the ninth. Hollimon reached base on a leadoff walk and Romero singled to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Nathan Hanson lined a single to right to plate Hollimon. Chris Parmelee added an RBI double to bring the `Cats within two runs. Solarte struck out looking to end the comeback and game.

Rodriguez (2-2) held the Rock Cats to five hits and one earned run in five innings. Heath Humbree notched his seventh save.

ALLSTATE PLAYER OF THE GAME: 2B Charlie Culberson went 3-for-5 with three doubles and two RBI for Richmond. He also scored a run.
