Florimon's Slam Not Enough

Harrisburg, Pa. - Shortstop Pedro Florimon hit the Baysox first grand slam of the season, but Bowie still fell 5-4 to Harrisburg Tuesday night. The loss drops the Baysox to 51-43 on the season.

Harrisburg got on the board early against right-handed starting pitcher Oliver Drake. Chris Rahl singled to third base and moved to second when Bryce Harper grounded out to first base. Tim Pahuta singled to left field to drive in Rahl and moved to third when Stephen King singled to left field. The hits kept coming when Chris McConnell singled to shortstop to put the Senators up 2-0.

The Senators added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning. Tyler Moore hit a lead off home run to right-center field, his 21st of the season and fourth against the Baysox. Rahl then doubled to right field and moved to third when Harper flied out to center field. Pahuta singled to right field to plate Rahl and give Harrisburg a 4-0 lead.

The Baysox tied the game in the top of the sixth inning against Harrisburg starter Shairon Martis. Third baseman LJ Hoes hit a lead off single to left field and with one out, left fielder Buck Britton doubled to right field and moved Hoes to third. Designated hitter Brandon Waring was hit by a pitch to load the bases before catcher Stever Lerud struck out for the second out of the inning. Florimon tied the game at four with one swing of the bat when he hit a grand slam home run to right-center field.

The Senators regained the lead in the bottom of the eighth inning against right-handed reliever Wynn Pelzer. With one out, Pelzer issued back-to-back walks before Bill Rhinehart hit an RBI single to right field to put Harrisburg up 5-4. The run allowed by Pelzer was the first he had surrendered in the month of July after four consecutive scoreless appearances.

The Baysox threatened to take their first lead in the top of the eighth inning after Waring hit a one out triple, but after Lerud struck out and Florimon was intentionally walked, Harrisburg reliever Rafael Martin entered the game. Martin struck out four consecutive batters to finish the game for the Senators.

Drake struggled in his start for the Baysox as he lasted just three and one-third innings and allowed four runs on 10 hits while striking out one. Right-handed reliever Eddie Gamboa pitched three and two-thirds innings scoreless in relief of Drake and allowed one hit while striking out two. Pelzer pitched one inning and allowed one run as he was credited with the loss.

Waring recorded a double and a triple in the loss against the Senators, but was able to raise his batting average above .200 to .202 for the first time since May 5. Lerud struggled at the plate as he struck out four times and became the first Baysox player to hit that mark this season.

Wednesday, LHP Zach Britton (0-1, 3.00) takes the mound for the Baysox as they finish their three game road trip to Harrisburg. His opponent will be RHP Tanner Roark (4-6, 6.36) for game that starts at noon.

The Baysox began a three-game road trip Monday night in Harrisburg. They return home Thursday, July 21, for a seven game home stand that features Daddy Daughter Date Night Thursday night, Bowie's Largest Pillow Fight and Heroes Night Friday, Welcome to Margaritaville Saturday night and the Jayson Werth Bobblehead giveaway Monday, July 25.
