Washington Wild Things News Release
WASHINGTON, Pa. - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, today announced that left-handed starting pitcher Vidal Nuno signed with the New York Yankees organization. He will report to the Staten Island Yankees of the New York Penn League (Single-A), where he is expected to be on the team's Opening Day roster.
Nuno started six games for the Wild Things this season, including a complete game Monday night in Joliet, Ill. He had posted a 2.83 ERA and 2-3 record with 34 strikeouts and 12 walks in 41.1 innings pitched.
Darin Everson, director of baseball operations and field manager for the Wild Things, said, "We are very excited to see Nuno's contract purchased by the Yankees. He has been a terrific performer for us this season and throughout his career, and we think he is going to do a great job for the Yankees as well. We obviously wish Vidal the best and hope he continues to climb up the Yankees farm system."
Nuno, a 2009 draft pick of the Cleveland Indians, played the past two seasons in the Indians organization. In 2010, he posted a 6-8 record and 4.96 ERA for Lake County of the Midwest League. He struck out 94 batters in 94.1 innings pitched last summer.
In 2009, Nuno combined for a 2.39 ERA in games with the AZL Indians and Mahoning Valley. With New York Penn League's Scrappers, he went 5-0 with a 2.05 ERA in 13 games.
The National City, Calif., native played college baseball at Baker University, going 9-3 with a 2.63 ERA in 2009 and 6-4 with a 1.33 ERA in 2008. He also played two seasons for Southwest College where he was named Pacific Coast Conference Baseball Player of the Year in 2007.
Nuno is the second Wild Thing player to have his contract purchased by a MLB organization this year. Pitcher Alan Williams signed with the Milwaukee Brewers organization in May.
The Wild Things are currently on the road for a three-game series with the Joliet Slammers. The team returns to CONSOL Energy Park on Thursday, June 16, to face the Windy City ThunderBolts at 6:35 p.m. Thursday's game features Dollar Thirst-day and a St. Patrick's Day in June celebration.
