Portland Sea Dogs News Release
New Britain, Connecticut - The Portland Sea Dogs scored five runs in the third inning and three more in the sixth and ninth as they beat the New Britain Rock Cats 11-6 on Sunday afternoon. After being rained out Saturday, the Sea Dogs managed to avoid the series sweep on the strength of home runs from Ryan Lavarnway and Tim Federowicz (Fed-ur-oh-vitch). Stephen Fife (2-0) gave up three runs over five innings, but still earned his second win in as many starts this year.
Portland fell behind 1-0, but roared back with a five-run third inning. Alex Hassan (Hass-un) doubled in a pair of runs to make it 3-1 Sea Dogs. Lavarnway followed in the inning with his first round-tripper of the year to expand the lead to 5-1. Federowicz added to the Portland lead with his second shot of the year off Brett Jacobsen to start the sixth inning. Oscar Tejeda and Ryan Dent would go on to add an RBI each that off Jacobsen to extend the gap to 8-3 in favor of the Sea Dogs.
Chris Parmelee homered off Jeremy Kehrt to start the bottom half of sixth inning. Portland managed to turn around a situation that had hurt them so far this season: hitting with runners in scoring position. They had been batting just .231 with men on second or better, compared to .269 overall as a team. Hassan's first-inning single ensured that his hit streak would stay alive. The left fielder has now recorded at least one hit in every game this season.
The Rock Cats got a rally going off Kehrt in the seventh inning, bringing it to an 8-6 game after a Parmelee RBI single. Seth Garrison would come in to relieve Kehrt, and get Michael Hollimon to pop out with the bases loaded and end the threat. Mitch Dening added the exclamation point for Portland with a solo home run off Santos Arias in the top of the ninth.
The Sea Dogs will continue their inaugural road trip of 2011 in Binghamton tomorrow. Michael Lee (0-0) will make his second start of the year against Brandon Moore (0-0) at 6:35 PM. The two teams will also play at 6:35 PM Tuesday and Wednesday. The Sea Dogs then return home for a seven game swing with the Rock Cats and Mets. April 22nd will be the first Fireworks night of the year, sponsored by Oxford Networks. You can buy tickets in person, over the phone at 207-879-9500, or you can buy online at www.seadogs.com.
