SOUTH BEND, Ind. - The TinCaps lost Game 1 of Friday's doubleheader to the South Bend Silver Hawks, 2-1. They rebounded to salvage a split, winning the nightcap, 5-2. Nate Freiman went 7- for-7 with three doubles.
The three doubles bring Freiman's season total to 41, a new franchise record.
In Game 1, the TinCaps fell behind on Keon Broxton's first-inning home run. A pair of fifth-inning errors led to another run and Fort Wayne trailed, 2-0.
Freiman smashed a two-out RBI double in the sixth to bring home the only Fort Wayne run. In the top of the seventh, the TinCaps put the leadoff man on base but could not score as Rose-Hulman product Derek Eitel picked up the save.
South Bend LHP Tyler Skaggs (9-5) fired five shutout innings to pick up the win; Fort Wayne RHP Matt Lollis (5-2) took the loss and Eitel grabbed his first save.
In Game 2, Freiman drove in Jeudy Valdez in the top of the first to put the TinCaps in front. South Bend tied it an inning later on David Narodowski's two-out infield hit.
Bobby Borchering hammered a home run to lead off the fourth to give South Bend a 2-1 lead, but Jonathan Galvez hit a two-run blast in the top of the sixth to make it 3-2. A Freiman double in the seventh capped a two-run rally which inflated the lead to 5-2.
Fort Wayne LHP Noah Mull (3-0) notched the win in relief. Silver Hawks RHP Chris Odegaard (5- 3) was saddled the loss. RHP Miles Mikolas retired all four batters he faced for his 13th save.
Fort Wayne's record is now to 40-27 in the half, 76-61 for the season. The Silver Hawks finish their home schedule at 28-38 in the second half, 58-76 for the year.
The TinCaps return to Parkview Field for their final homestand of the regular season against the West Michigan Whitecaps (Class-A Detroit Tigers) Saturday at 7:05 p.m. Fort Wayne RHP Jerry Sullivan (7-4) takes the ball against Whitecaps RHP Trevor Feeney (11-13).
