B-Mets Squander Late Lead, Drop Opener at Trenton, 7-4

Robert Carson fired 5 2/3 scoreless innings and left with a 4-0 lead, but the B-Mets' bullpen allowed a seven-run outburst in the seventh to drop a 7-4 decision at Trenton Friday night. Binghamton has now lost eight of its last nine games.

The B-Mets tallied in the fourth off starter Andrew Brackman, who allowed back-to-back hits to Marshall Hubbard and Mike Nickeas leading off the frame. A passed ball advanced the runners to second and third, from where Hubbard would score on a Luke Montz groundout, making it 1-0.

Binghamton (54-59) put up a crooked number in the fifth and chased Brackman. With one out, Raul Reyes singled on the infield, Sean Ratliff followed with a single and Zach Lutz plated Reyes with a double into the left-field corner, upping the lead to 2-0. After Marshall Hubbard reached on a fielder's choice, Brackman walked Mike Nickeas to load the bases. Josh Satin kept the bat on his shoulder to knock the Thunder starter from the game with a bases-loaded walk for his 24th RBI. J.B. Cox replaced Brackman and proceeded to walk Montz, creating a 4-0 cushion.

Carson exited in the sixth after walking a pair of hitters. Dylan Owen replaced him and walked the first man he faced, but struck out Damon Sublett to strand the bases full.

Owen and the bullpen would not be so fortunate in the seventh. Daniel Brewer singled leading off the frame and was joined on base by Matt Cusick, who Owen walked. With two aboard, Luis Nunez dropped a liner in shallow center that Reyes dove for but missed. The ball rolled to the wall allowing the Trenton (67-46) to cut the B-Mets lead in half. Eric Niesen then relieved Owen and proceeded to walk back-to-back hitters, loading the bases.

The lefty was pulled in favor of Manuel Alvarez, who quickly got an out on a sac fly from Justin Christian, trimming the Binghamton advantage to 4-3. However, Corban Joseph struck the crippling blow next with a two-run triple to the gap in right-center, vaulting the Thunder into a 5-4 lead. Trenton would add two more runs to make it a seven-run stanza.

Ryan Pope worked 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn the win and Kevin Whelan struck out the side in the ninth to notch the save for the Thunder.

Reyes led Binghamton with a three-hit showing. Both teams ripped 10 hits in the contest.

Binghamton will attempt to even the series with the middle game of the three-game set Saturday at 7:05 PM. RHP Jenrry Mejia (0-0, 2.70) will oppose RHP Adam Warren (3-1, 2.95) of Trenton.
