Florida Panthers Assign Matthias, Ellerby To Amerks
January 15, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Rochester Americans News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Americans Vice President of Hockey Operations Ted Nolan announced today that the Florida Panthers have assigned forward Shawn Matthias and Keaton Ellerby to the Amerks.
The pair will join the team this evening as Rochester takes on the Hamilton Bulldogs at 7:30 p.m. at Copps Coliseum. Fans can tune in for the live broadcast on SportsRadio 1280 WHTK and FM 107.3, Rochester's Sports Talk. The contest will be the sixth of 10 scheduled meetings this season and the fourth in as many weeks between the divisional foes. Rochester is 3-1-1-0 this season and has outscored the Bulldogs 18-14 through the previous five encounters. The Amerks own a 66-52-9 all-time record against the Montreal Canadiens' affiliate.
Matthias, 22, returns to Rochester after receiving his fourth call-up to the National Hockey League this season. A native of Mississauga, Ontario, Matthias has scored three goals and two assists for five points in 21 games with the Panthers this season.
In 20 American Hockey League contests with the Amerks, the second-year pro has registered eight points (3+5) and eight penalty minutes. In 41 career NHL games with Florida, the 6-foot-3, 211-pound centerman has tallied nine points (5+4) and eight PIM. Originally a second-round selection (47thoverall) by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft, Matthias was acquired by the Panthers in a trade that sent forward Todd Bertuzzi to the Wings.
Ellerby rejoins his post on the Amerks' blueline after earning 4:58 of ice time in his NHL debut in Florida's 3-2 win over the Tampa Bay Lightning last night. In 38 games with the Amerks this season, the Strathmore, Alberta, native has scored six goals and 10 assists for 16 points, in addition to a plus-seven on-ice rating.
The second-year pro will represent the Canadian All-Stars at the 2010 Time Warner Cable AHL All-Star Classic, which will be held January 18th -19th at the Cumberland County Civic Center in Portland, Maine.
The 6-foot-4, 186-pound blueliner was Florida's first-round selection (10thoverall) in the 2007 NHL Entry Draft.
