P-Bruins Defeat Pirates 4-3

Portland, ME - The Providence Bruins defeated the Portland Pirates 4-3 Saturday evening at the Cumberland County Civic Center. The P-Bruins got their goals from Jordan Knackstedt, Brad Marchand and two goals from Trent Whitfield. The P-Bruins return home to the Dunkin' Donuts Center Friday at 7:05 p.m. for Winter Hat Night against the Lowell Devils.

The P-Bruins took the 1-0 lead at the 1:21 mark of the opening period. Marchand held the puck at the top of the left face off circle and put the puck in the low slot for Knackstedt. He put a shot on net and the rebound went to Whitfield, who tallied his fifth goal of the season. Providence went ahead 2-0 at the 5:19 mark. The Pirates turned the puck over in their own end, where Whitfield picked it up and scored his second goal of the game and sixth of the season. Portland pulled within a goal at the 5:46 mark. Cody McCormick netted his sixth goal of the season, while Paul Byron and Mike Weber recorded the assists. The Pirates tied the game at two at the 13:34 mark. Derek Whitmore tallied his fifth goal of the season, while Drew Schiestel and Matt Caruana grabbed the assists. The P-Bruins retook the lead at the 16:14 mark. Whitfield chipped the puck out of the P-Bruins zone and passed it to Marchand, who picked it up in the neutral zone and fed Knackstedt, who stick handled it through two Pirates defensemen before putting it into the net for his first goal of the season. Providence led 3-2 going into the first intermission.

Portland tied the game at three at the 10:17 mark of the second period, while on the power play. Kyle Wanvig netted his sixth goal of the season, with Nathan Gerbe and Marc-Andre Gragnani getting the assists. The game went into the second intermission tied at three.

The P-Bruins retook the lead at the 8:24 mark of the third period, while on the power play. Zach Hamill held the puck along the boards and sent it to Mikko Lehtonen in the left face off circle. He found Marchand backdoor, who tallied his eighth goal of the season. Providence went on to the 4-3 victory.

Dany Sabourin stopped 26 of 29 shots for the P-Bruins, while Patrick Lalime made 22 saves for the Pirates. The P-Bruins were 1-for-2 on the power play and 4-for-5 on the penalty kill.

The P-Bruins return to action at The Dunk Friday against the Devils for Reds Winter Hat Night at 7:05 p.m. Saturday Providence heads back on the road to take on the Albany River Rats at the Times Union Center at 7:00 p.m., before wrapping up the weekend Sunday at The Dunk against the Manchester Monarchs at 4:05 p.m. for a Family Game.
