
Bruins Nip Pirates To End Streak

Portland, Maine - Brad Marchand scored the game winner on a power-play midway through the third period as the Providence Bruins shaded the Portland Pirates 4-3 in an American Hockey League game played tonight in front of 4,095 at the Cumberland County Civic Center.
Trent Whitfield added a pair of goals for the Bruins, who won their fourth straight game to improve to 14-11-1-0 on the season. Jordan Knackstedt rounded out the Providence scoring.
Cody McCormick, Derek Whitmore and Kyle Wanvig struck for the Pirates, who saw their 11-game point streak (7-0-3-1) come to an end with the loss. The Pirates are now 12-11-3-1 on the season.
Providence jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the game but goals by McCormick and Whitmore evened the count. Knackstedt struck late in the frame to push the Bruins ahead 3-2 after one. Wanvig netted the lone goal of the second to send the two teams into the third tied at three. Marchand settled with his third straight game winning goal, two of which came in a shootout, eight minutes into the third period.
The Pirates out shot the Bruins 29-26 in the game as Patrick Lalime took the loss in his second and final conditioning appearance with Portland.

The weekend ends Sunday afternoon when the Pirates travel to Worcester to take on the Sharks in the next installment of the UNUM Challenge. The 3:05 p.m. game can be heard live on News Talk WLOB 95.5 FM and on-line at www.portlandpirates.com beginning with the pre-game show at 2:45 p.m.
