‘Cats get even, beat the ‘Dogs 4-1

(New Britain, CT) - The Rock Cats (15-20) used a 2-run second inning off RHP Justin Hedrick (1-1) and beat the Sea Dogs 4-1 in the nightcap of Saturday's day/night doubleheader at New Britain Stadium. Portland (18-17) won the day game 5-4 and wrap up their 8-game roadtrip on Sunday afternoon.

RHP Frank Mata (1-1) tossed 1.2 IP on two hits and one run and earned the win for the Rock Cats. RHP Anthony Slama earned his 6th save of the year by working 2.1 scoreless innings on two walks and two strikeouts.

Hedrick took the loss for Portland in his first start since September 3, 2004 with Salem-Keizer of the Northwest League (Short Season-A). The righty yielded three runs on five hits in 4 IP. RHP Zach Ward made his first start of the season for the Rock Cats and worked three hitless innings on two walks and fanned two.

New Britain took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on a run-scoring double by 1B Whit Robbins. With one out, 3B Juan Portes drew a walk and scored on RF Rene Tosoni's single to left field. The 'Cats added a run in the third inning on a sac-fly by Lis.

RHP Richie Lentz pitched two innings for the 'Dogs, giving up the final run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch. Portland's only run happened in the fourth inning on 3B Jorge Jimenez's RBI single. LF Aaron Bates started the rally with a one-out double - Portland's only two hits on the night.

The Sea Dogs and Rock Cats wrap up their 5-game series on Sunday afternoon with a 1:35 PM contest. Notes...The Sea Dogs are 4-3 on the roadtrip and look for their 5th series win on Sunday afternoon...Portland and New Britain have split 10 games on the season...Jimenez picked up his team-leading 27th RBI and ranks 4th in the league in hitting at .353.
