May 16, 2009 - Eastern League (EL1)
Erie SeaWolves News Release
The SeaWolves came out on the short end of a rain-shortened game on Saturday night at Prince George's Stadium, 4-0, at the hands of the Bowie Baysox.
Trailing 4-0 in the top of the eighth inning, the umpires were forced to call for the tarp with Erie at the plate.
Erie's offense was shut down from the outset by Bowie starter Jake Arrieta. In the top of the second inning, Alex Avila walked with one out and Deik Scram singled through the right side, putting two runners on base. Arrieta came back to strikeout the final two batters, Cale Iorg and Andy Dirks, ending the threat. It proved to be Erie's only threat of the night.
Bowie got on the board against Erie starter Jon Kibler in the bottom of the first inning. Jonathan Tucker singled with one out bringing up Brandon Snyder. Snyder connected on a two-run home run, his sixth, giving the Baysox a 2-0 lead. Five of Snyder's six home runs this season have come against the âWolves.
The Baysox would add to the lead in the top of the fifth, courtesy of an Erie error. Guillermo Rodriguez led off with a double and Robert Valido walked to put a pair on base for the top of the lineup. Dave Krynzel laid down a sacrifice bunt to push the runners into scoring position. With the âWolves infield drawn in, Tucker hit a sharp ground ball to Scott Sizemore at second. Sizemore made a great diving play but threw the ball off the glove of the catcher Avila to the backstop. Both Rodriguez and Valido came in to score for a 4-0 Baysox lead. The runs would be unearned against Kibler.
Kibler (1-3) worked seven innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Three of the five hits he gave up were in the first inning and scatters two over the next six. It was the second complete game of the season for Kibler. Both of his complete games have bee of the rain-shortened variety.
Arrieta picked up his second win against the âWolves working seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit with three walks and a season-high 10 strikeouts.
