New Britain Rock Cats News Release

New Britain, CT - Zach Ward tossed three hitless innings in his first start of the season and the bullpen sealed the victory as the Rock Cats downed Portland, 4-1 in the nightcap of Saturday's Day/Night doubleheader.

The Rock Cats received back-to-back doubles from Erik Lis and Whit Robbins to start off the second. Lis scored on Robbins' two-base hit to right for the first run of the game. Rene Tosoni tacked on an RBI single.

In the third, Brian Dinkelman tripled to right field and scored on Lis' sacrifice fly to center for a 3-0 advantage.

Ward retired the first eight-straight batters he faced before issuing two walks and uncorking a wild pitch in the third, but he escaped the inning unharmed by forcing a fly out by Mark Wagner.

Ward gave way to Frank Mata in the fourth, who struck out the first batter he faced before allowing a double to Aaron Bates. Jorge Jimenez then singled to left to knock in Bates.

Mata picked up the win with one run on two hits through 1 2/3 innings. Anthony Slama notched his sixth save with 2 1/3 shutout innings in relief.

Justin Hedrick (1-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs on five hits in four innings.
