San Antonio Rampage News Release
ROSEMONT, Illinois - (January 7, 2009) - The San Antonio Rampage scored three times on the power play and got a pair of goals from captain Jeff Hoggan as they topped the defending Calder Cup Champion Chicago Wolves 5-3 at the Allstate Arena on Wednesday night. The red hot Rampage have won 12 of their last 16 games.
San Antonio scored the only goal of the first period on a power play. Forward David Spina found forward Chad Kolarik in the slot for a wrist shot that banked in off the post at 10:42. It was the 11th tally of the campaign for Kolarik.
In the second period the Rampage got the first of the evening from their red hot captain. Hoggan set a new franchise record as he scored a goal in his sixth straight game by cutting to the front of the net and scoring at 4:59 for a 2-0 lead and his team leading 15th goal. Later in the period the Rampage extended their lead. Forward Wyatt Smith scored on a great centering pass from forward Brett MacLean for another power play tally at 14:58. It was the sixth of the season for Smith. With less than 90 seconds left in the frame the Wolves got on the scoreboard as forward Jordan LaVallee scored on a screened slap shot from the right point to make it a 3-1 game after 40 minutes.
In the third period the Rampage once again increased their lead to three goals as they connected on yet another power play chance. MacLean banged the puck loose as Wolves goalie Dan Turple tried to cover it and then slipped it over the line for his 11th of the year and a 4-1 lead at 5:51. The Wolves responded at 8:16 as LaValle tallied his second of the game on a breakaway with a nifty backhand finish short side top shelf. Just over five minutes later forward Brett Sterling got loose on another breakaway and went upstairs with a wrister to beat Rampage goalie Josh Tordjman high glove side and cut the San Antonio lead to one goal. With the Wolves goalie pulled Hoggan sealed the win with his second of the game into the empty net. FINAL SCORE San Antonio 5, Chicago 3.
Tordjman stopped 25 of 28 shots in 60 minutes and improved to 12-13-1. Turple allowed four goals on 29 shots in 58:28 and fell to 5-7-0. The Rampage went 3-7 on the power play to tie a season high, while Chicago was 0-5. San Antonio out shot the Wolves 34-28.
