Chops Move Into Sole Possession of 2nd Place with Big 3-1 Win
January 7, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Iowa Chops News Release
Thanks to three, 3rd period goals and 22 saves from David LeNeveu, the Iowa Chops moved their record over the Peoria Rivermen to 4-1 this season with an exciting 3-1 win on Wednesday at the Carver Arena in Peoria. The Iowa Chops entered the game with two players in their line-up (Defenseman Matt Frick and Forward Jason Bailey) playing in their first career AHL game. The Chops played a smart, defensive 1st period. After a good opening save by Chops goaltender David LeNeveu, the Chops settled in a killed two penalties during the opening frame. The best chance for the Chops on Rivermen goalie Ben Bishop in the 1st period came off the stick of Chops forward Josh Green, who beat Bishop with a deke from the side, but ran out of room and could not put the puck in the open net with the puck just hanging inches from the goal line. The Rivermen outshot the Chops 6-5 in the swift moving period. The 2nd period was more stingy defense and goaltending. The Chops best chance in the period came off the stick of Ryan Donally, who hit the post on his initial chance and got a big rebound only to see Ben Bishop steer it aside with the paddle of his stick. Both teams fired off 10 shots in the scoreless 2nd period. The 3rd period was an exciting back and forth afair that saw the Chops score the first goal of the game thanks to a beneficial bounce from a shot from Brian Salcido that deflected right to an open Eric Boguniecki, who smashed home the loose puck past a helpless Bishop for a 1-0 lead. The Rivermen would answer off a Chops turnover deep in their own zone, as Jeff Cowan got a loose puck in the high slot and beat LeNeveu throught the legs to tie the game at 1-1. The Iowa Chops got the lead back on their second power play of the night, as Matt Beleskey hammered home a one-timer from a beautiful cross-ice pass from TJ Trevelyan and more help from Brian Salcido to give the Chops a lead they wouldn't give up. With the net empty and the Chops on the penalty kill, a clearing attempt found its way to the stick of Josh Green who scored on the empty net to give the Chops the 3-1 win over Peoria and move into sole possession of 2nd place in the AHL's West Division.
