Mattias Karlsson selected to PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team

BINGHAMTON, N.Y. - The Binghamton Senators, in conjunction with the American Hockey League, announced today that defenseman Mattias Karlsson has been selected to the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team for the 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications, to be played later this month at the DCU Center in Worcester, Mass.

Karlsson, 23, is tied for fourth among all defensemen in the AHL in points (24) and assists (20). Karlsson has helped push the B-Sens power play to the top of the league, with 17 of his 24 points coming with a man advantage. He's posted three points in a game on two occasions this season, most recently with a three-assist night in Binghamton's 3-2 win over Syracuse on Dec. 26.

The native of Orebro, Sweden, was drafted by Ottawa in the fourth round (135th overall) of the 2003 NHL entry draft.

The 2009 AHL All-Star Classic presented by Charter Communications will feature the top young talent in the American Hockey League competing in the 2009 AHL All-Star Skills Competition on Sunday, January 25 (4:00 p.m. ET), and the 2009 AHL All-Star Game on Monday, January 26 (7:00 p.m. ET). The event will be televised nationally in the United States and Canada.

Of the 455 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 94 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including Patrice Bergeron, Brad Boyes, Dan Boyle, Brian Campbell, Zdeno Chara, Rick DiPietro, Jiri Hudler, Miikka Kiprusoff, Kari Lehtonen, Ryan Miller, Zach Parise, Martin St. Louis, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal and Tomas Vokoun.

The B-Sens return to the ice on Friday, Jan 9 for an East Division showdown with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at 7:05 p.m. Good seats remain for this contest.
