Peoria Rivermen News Release
Peoria, Ill. (January 7, 2009) - A scoreless tie through the first 40 minutes ended in a 3-1 win for the Iowa Chops over the Peoria Rivermen Wednesday night at Carver Arena. Jeff Cowan scored the only goal for the Rivermen to tie the game at one with 11:25 remaining in regulation but Matt Beleskey's power-play goal at 10:26 proved to be the game winner.
Both Ben Bishop and David LeNeveu kept the shooters off the board through the first two minutes by turning away 15 and 16 shots respectively. The Rivermen were held to 0-for-5 on the power play while the Chops scored on just two chances.
Eric Boguniecki was responsible for the game's first goal at 6:02 of the third period. A shot from Andrew Thomas at the right point was blocked and caromed onto the stick of Boguniecki in the left circle who wasted no time sliding home. It was the seventh goal of the season for the former St. Louis Blue who spent two games with the Rivermen during the 2005-06 season.
The Rivermen responded on Jeff Cowan's third goal of the year at 8:35. Jonathan Filewich created a turnover deep inside the Chops' zone and Cowan slipped the puck through the legs of LeNeveu. It was his first goal since Dec. 10 against Lake Erie.
Iowa scored the game-winning goal just 10 seconds after an Andy Wozniewski minor for slashing at 10:16. Off the faceoff, the Chops worked the puck up top and then three quick passes later, Beleskey was open for a one-timer from the right circle.
With time ticking down and the Rivermen on the power play, the Rivermen pulled Bishop to create a six-on-four advantage for the final 1:05 of regulation but couldn't find one past LeNeveu. Josh Green added an empty netter with nine seconds remaining for the Chops' third goal.
The Rivermen are now 1-3-1 against the Chops season and will next see Iowa on Jan. 30 in Des Moines.
