Trenton Devils News Release

TRENTON, NJ (November 17, 2008) -- The Trenton Devils started the weekend with a 6-2 loss to the Johnstown Chiefs Friday night and ended it by snapping a five-game winless streak with a Saturday night victory over the Reading Royals, 4-1. The Devils have a busy week ahead with games against the Wheeling Nailers, Elmira Jackals, and Johnstown Chiefs.

CHIEFS CHOP DEVILS: A four-goal first period gave the edge for the Johnstown Chiefs throughout the contest as they defeated the Trenton Devils by the score of 6-2 on Friday night. The Chiefs got on the board 1:13 into the contest when Ryan Garlock potted his fifth goal of the season past Jason Smith. Eight seconds later, Brian Deeth converted on a turnover by Dylan Quaile to get his first goal of the season. The Chiefs scored two late goals in the first to increase their lead to four on tallies by Petr Pohl and Alex Penner. Emergency backup goalie Matt Conti into was pressed into duty at the start of the second period, and he impressed by making some early saves until Pohl scored his second of the game 4:33 into the middle period. Rookie defenseman Dave Leaderer then put Trenton on the board with his first professional goal at 9:19 of the second with a wrist shot over the right shoulder of Kris Mayotte. Ryan Gunderson scored on the power play in the third period to put the Devils within three, but Greg Gallagher earned a power play tally of his own to create the final score of 6-2. Tyler Burton had two assists for the Devils, who went 1-for-9 on the power play.

DEVILS DESTROY ROYALS: In a turn of events from their game played the night before, the Trenton Devils would dominate from start to finish as they defeated the Reading Royals on the road Saturday night, 4-1. Jeff Prough deflected a Rob Page wrist shot into the net to give Trenton a 1-0 lead 2:08 into the contest. The Devils continued to control the play but were denied at each opportunity by Royals goaltender Danny Taylor until Tyler Burton scored on a wrap around while falling down to make it a two-goal game 15:45 into the second. Brett Pilkington scored a power play goal on a breakaway with 54 seconds left in the middle period to put Trenton up three going into the second intermission. The Royals got back into the game with an early goal by Kevin Harvey, but that was the only puck to get by Charlie Effinger, who made 34 saves in a dazzling Trenton debut, earning his first professional win for his efforts. Matt Radoslovich added an empty-netter, his second goal of the season, as the Devils outshot the Royals 51-36.

BRETT-ACULAR: Out of the many moves made during the season by the Trenton Devils, Brett Pilkington has proved to be among the best, as the third-year forward has a goal and seven assists in seven games since joining the club from Elmira.

THE ROOKIE: It's not too often that emergency backup goaltenders get to see action in a game, but that's exactly what happened to Matt Conti for the second time in his career. The 39-year-old looked sharp with 15 saves on 17 shots, as the Chiefs peppered him early into the relief appearance. Conti famously entered into the third period of the 2006-07 season finale against Wheeling Nailers, when he stopped all 10 shots in what became a 5-4 Trenton loss.

THE NEXT STEP: A rash of injuries throughout the Devils system resulted in the call-ups of three Trenton forwards to the American Hockey League's Lowell Devils on Monday: Tyler Burton, Eric Castonguay, and Trevor Kell. Burton returned to Trenton along with right wing Benoit Mondou on Thursday. Kell scored a goal in Lowell's 3-2 shootout loss to Albany on Saturday.

QUICK HITS: More additions were made to the Devils this week, as Jeff Prough, Dan Travis and Charlie Effinger all joined the team. Each of those players had a point over the weekend, including a rare assist for a goaltender by Effinger...Dan Eves, who was acquired last weekend from Idaho, did not join the team for their road games in Pennsylvania. The forward was travelling cross-country from Idaho and did not make it to Trenton until Thursday...All of Ryan Gunderson's 12 points have come on the power play.

UPCOMING GAMES

Wednesday, November 19, 7:35 p.m. -- Devils @ Wheeling Nailers

The Devils return to West Virginia for their third meeting against the Wheeling Nailers. The two teams split a pair of games in Wheeling in October, as the Devils won in a shootout 5-4 on the 25th and the Nailers won 5-3 on the 26th. The Nailers have continued their hot start, with a record of 7-1-1-3 as of press time. Four of the ECHL's top ten point scorers are on Wheeling, including Tommy Goebel (7g, 13a) and Rob Sirianni (8g, 11a), who are first and second in the league, respectively.

Friday, November 21, 7:30 p.m. -- Devils vs. Elmira Jackals

The Devils host the Elmira Jackals for the third meeting of the season between the two teams. Elmira has beaten Trenton twice, 3-2 at Trenton on October 19 and 4-3 in a shootout at Elmira on November 1. The Jackals are led by Tyler Donati, who is tied for second in the league in points with 19. Donati did not play in the last game against Trenton, and could figure to be a tough challenge for the Devils on Friday.

Saturday, November 22, 7:05 p.m. -- Devils @ Johnstown Chiefs

The Devils will look for revenge just over a week after losing to the Chiefs at Cambria County War Memorial Arena. The Chiefs are 2-1-0-0 against the Devils this season, and are led by Randy Rowe and Petr Pohl, who have 15 points apiece. Ryan Garlock has scored three goals in the two games he has played against Trenton this season.
